  • Maroon Tide girls claim 10th win

     MAX MEADOWS –– Galax improved to 10-2-1 on the year with a 5-0 shutout win over Fort Chiswell in a MED girls’ soccer match Tuesday.

    Mirieda Martinez scored twice from outside the box to lead Galax.  Chantasy Cottrell converted a Sonia Solis assist for a goal, Alexandra Moreno set up Jessica Salinas for a goal and Kelsey Williams scored unassisted for the Maroon Tide.

    Abbi Ponce had the shutout in goal for Galax.

  • Grayson one win away after topping Fort 10-0

     INDEPENDENCE ––  Dylan Isom highlighted a five-run fourth inning with a two-run single as the Blue Devils clinched at least a tie for the MED title Wednesday with a 10-0, five-inning win over Fort Chiswell.

    Grayson County needs to win against either Galax today or Narrows next week to seal the season championship.

    Tyler Rutherford and Dustin Leonard each went 3-for-3 at the plate with Rutherford scoring three runs and Leonard driving in two.

  • Kimble, Cavs silence Devils

    HILLSVILLE –– Having paused for what may have been the shortest senior day observance in the history of such procedures, Carroll County made it a short afternoon with an 8-0 nondistrict softball win over Grayson County.

    After the introduction of lone 12th-grader Lindsey Davidson followed by an impromptu fly-over by a gaggle of wayward geese, junior-heavy Carroll County upped its record to 13-3 Monday on the strength of a five-run fifth inning and a tidy two-hitter by pitcher Lillie Kimble.

  • Walk-off HR lifts Fort over Galax 17-16

     MAX MEADOWS –– Having combined for 24 runs on 19 hits in just three innings, things seemingly got back to normal when Galax and Fort Chiswell totaled just one run over the next three frames.

    Turns out that the two teams were just saving up for the big finish.

    Alex Larrowe’s grand slam gave the Maroon Tide a 16-13 lead in the top of the seventh but the Pioneers hit for the cycle in the bottom half, including Josh Underwood’s two-run walk-off homer as Fort Chiswell took a wild 17-16 win over Galax in an MED slugfest Friday afternoon.

  • Softball title hopes vanish in 10th

     HILLSVILLE –– Taylor Creasy’s two-out, two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning lifted Tazewell to a 7-5 Southwest District win Thursday and extinguished Carroll County’s district title hopes.

    Carroll County (12-3 overall, 7-2 district) trailed 5-1 in the middle of the fourth before beginning to chip away, starting with an RBI triple by Jordan Nunn in the fourth.

  • Carroll County bounces back

    HILLSVILLE –– After a day like Thursday, a day like Friday couldn’t have come soon enough.

    Twenty-four hours after a discouraging 10-run loss at Richlands, Carroll County bounced back offensively in a big way, pounding out seven extra-base hits, including three home runs, in a 15-2 win over Marion at Bill Worrell Field.

    The game was halted after five on the 10-run rule.

  • Cavaliers pull out 11-10 win to salvage split with Floyd County

    FLOYD –– Carroll County and Floyd County split a double header Thursday as two vastly different games resulted in two equally tight finishes.
    The two teams combined for two hits in the opener as Floyd took a 2-0 win. Kat Mills broke a scoreless tie with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth for the Buffaloes. Amber Ingram was then hit by a pitch and eventually scored on Courtney Huff’s sacrifice fly.
    Ingram handed the Cavaliers just their second defeat of the season by tossing a one-hitter with six strikeouts.

  • Maroon Tide jumps on Pioneers

    With the visitors’ team bus arriving late, the Galax-Fort Chiswell soccer double header Thursday night was nearly an hour late in getting under way.
    Galax got it going early nonetheless.
    The Maroon Tide girls needed but four minutes to find the goal in their 3-1 win, while the Galax boys scored in less than a half minute and rolled to a 7-1 win as the Tide swept the Mountain Empire District twin bill.

  • Grayson pulls away from Tide as Eller tosses one-hitter

     INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a close game and take an 8-0 win over Galax in a Mountain Empire District softball game Tuesday at the Grayson County Rec. Park.

    Leading 3-0 after five innings, the Blue Devils got back-to-back RBI doubles from Natasha Moore and Catherine Vaughan. Sarah Eller later stroked a three-run double for the final margin.

  • Cavaliers notch big Southwest softball win

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County took an early lead and held on for a 3-1 win over Abingdon in a key Southwest District softball game Tuesday.

    Abingdon (7-2 overall, 3-1 district) returns five starters from the team that lost in extra innings in last year’s Group AA state title game, but the Cavaliers (8-1, 4-1) held the Falcons scoreless through five innings while building a 3-0 lead.
