  • Knights come from nowhere to stun Cavs

    RADFORD –– With the Cave Spring softball team down by seven runs midway through the fourth inning Wednesday, the talk in the Knights’ dugout turned to whether anyone had seen “The Hangover Part II.”

    That is a movie about a night the characters can’t remember. But Wednesday’s game turned out to be one the Knights will never forget.

    Down by nine runs entering the bottom of the sixth, the Knights rallied for a 13-12, eight-inning win over Carroll County in a Region IV semifinal at Radford University.

  • Grayson County topples Chilhowie to reach state

    INDEPENDENCE – In its first two Region C Division 2 tournament games, Grayson County faced teams that would conclude their seasons with a combined record of 36-6.

    Five of those six losses, including a pair of win-or-go-home decisions, were at the hands of the Blue Devils.

    Grayson County (14-7) held a formidable Chilhowie lineup to three runs through six innings while the Blue Devils used bookend four-run rallies in the first and last innings to power their way back into the region title game, taking a 9-5 win over the Warriors (19-3) Thursday at GNB Park.

  • Tide loses on 8-run seventh

    Holston’s Devin Keith can step away from the game of baseball after one varsity at-bat and feel content. Even if the freshman reserve player had not delivered the biggest hit in the biggest win in school history, he’ll probably never see again what he witnessed Thursday.

    No. 1 seed Holston rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including five runs with two outs, to stun Galax 10-9 in the Region C Division 1 semifinals at Felts Park.

  • Devils, Stark reach regionals

     INDEPENDENCE –– Galax’s Carahline Stark won the Mountain Empire District girls’ tennis singles championship and Grayson County’s Laura Shearin and Lucy Phipps claimed the doubles title in the MED tournament recently at Grayson County High School.

    Stark defeated Abby Taylor of Narrows 6-0, 6-1 and Anna Turnmire of Grayson County blanked Fort Chiswell’s Courtney Robb 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. Stark downed Turnmire 6-1, 6-1 for the singles crown.

  • Devils win MED title; Cavaliers get past Tazewell

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County added the Mountain Empire District tournament softball championship to its regular season title, whipping Fort Chiswell 10-0 in five innings Thursday at the Grayson County Rec. Park.

    Sarah Eller got it done at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle for Grayson County (13-8), which will host a Region C Division 2 quarterfinal game Tuesday. Eller limited the Pioneers (7-11) to two hits in five innings, striking out 10 and walking none.

  • Late rally propels Fort past Tide

     INDEPENDENCE –– Sometimes that last out is the hardest one to put in the book.

    Galax held a two-run lead with two out in the bottom of the seventh and was one strike away from holding on for a one-run win, but Tye Kirby’s two-strike, two-out RBI single gave Fort Chiswell new life and the Pioneers edged the Maroon Tide 5-4 in eight innings in the Mountain Empire District semifinals Wednesday at Grayson National Bank Field.

  • Carroll Co. ousts Grundy

     HILLSVILLE –– It’s been proven this year that there’s no shame in having played a close baseball game with Grundy. Even a loss to the one-time Southwest District doormat isn’t nearly as surprising as it once was.

    Carroll County did neither.

    Facing a team that handed league-leading Tazewell its first SWD loss of the season just a week earlier, the Cavaliers jumped on the Golden Wave early and advanced to the SWD tournament semifinals with a 12-4 win Monday at Bill Worrell Field.

  • Maroon Tide repeats as MED track champions

     Galax swept the team titles at the Mountain Empire District track and field championships Wednesday, repeating the performance from a year ago and marking the 24th time the school has won district track championships since joining the MED.

    The Maroon Tide girls earned their ninth title by holding off Narrows 152-143 while the boys easily outpointed Grayson County 163-108 for their 15th district championship. Fort Chiswell’s boys were third with 86 points, followed by Bland County (35) and Narrows (30).

  • Strong homers lift Richlands

    HILLSVILLE –– A predictable offense isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, repetitiveness was a key Thursday for Richlands.

    Every nine batters, the kid wearing No. 13 hit one over the fence.

    Led by Bradley Strong’s three solo home runs and a solid effort by starting pitcher James Patton, Richlands knocked off Carroll County 6-2 in a Southwest District game at Bill Worrell Field.

  • Grayson back on top in MED

     NARROWS –– Three Grayson County pitchers limited Narrows to a pair of hits Monday and the Blue Devils wrapped up the Mountain Empire District regular season championship with a 10-0 win shortened to six innings.

    Jared Salts improved to 8-0 on the mound, giving up two singles in four innings. The senior right-hander struck out four and walked two. Dustin Leonard and Tyler Rutherford each pitched one hitless inning.
