    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County opens its 2011 schedule Friday with a trip to Sparta for a nondistrict game against Alleghany, N.C. First, the Blue Devils must get their collective heads to stop spinning after Friday’s wild benefit game win in Floyd.

  • Twin County volleyball preview

    GALAX

    In her 31 years coaching Galax High School’s varsity volleyball program, Rose Houk has seen a season end one match too early one time too often. Three years ago, the Tide was ousted from the postseason with Houk sitting at 299 career wins. Last year, Galax’s season came one short of Houk’s career win No. 340, which will earn career milestone recognition from the Virginia High School Coaches’ Association.

  • Grayson County rips into Floyd County 64-40

    FLOYD – It sounds like a basketball score but it was actually the first football game of the season between Grayson County and Floyd County.

    When the dust settled, the Blue Devils came away with a 64-40 victory in a benefit game that doesn’t count in the regular season record.

    But the players approached the game as the opportunity to open the season with a victory and build some momentum for this Friday night’s opening game against the Alleghany Trojans in Sparta, N.C.

  • Galax off to solid start

     DRAPER –– Galax golf coach Terry Snow probably got a pretty good idea of how stout his team could be after a scrimmage last week netted a team score of 1-under par.

    Monday’s events have only fueled his optimism.

    The Maroon Tide turned in a solid four-man team score of 295 to win the Draper Valley Prep Classic, a 15-team season-opening event held at the 6,414-yard par-72 Draper Valley Golf Club.

  • Carroll County trounces Falcons for SWD title

     ABINGDON –– With a large portion of the Carroll County softball team attending commencement ceremonies Saturday morning – as onlookers, not participants – the lone 12th-grader on the Cavaliers’ roster, Lindsey Davidson, received her diploma, officially exiting high school. Unofficially, the graduation of Davidson and her classmates made a group of season-long juniors a team of instant seniors.

    Later in the day, they played like it, too.

  • Galax boys advance to semis

    Once Galax realized that those long, booming leading passes it kept sending downfield were easy fodder for Glenvar’s offside trap, the Maroon Tide was just fine.

    Besides, it was way too hot to repeatedly sprint 40 yards for no more reward other than to see a waving linesman’s flag.

    After incurring five offside calls in less than 10 minutes of play, Galax adjusted its approach, worked through Glenvar’s defense rather than over it and advanced to the Region C semifinals with a 5-0 first round win Monday afternoon.

  • Pack’s best grows by leaps and bounds

     RADFORD –– Austin Pack’s burgeoning career as a moonlighting track star is climbing onward and upward. Onward to the state tournament and upward to…well, who knows how high.

    Pack, a junior who is better known as a quarterback, jumpshooter and pitcher/infielder, and whose lone job in track is bar-hopping, opened some eyes and set a new school record last Saturday by winning the Region C high jump championship at Radford University with a leap of six feet, six and a quarter inches.

    That’s 6-6. And a quarter.

  • Cavaliers jump on Tunstall early

     DRY FORK –– Carroll County came off the bus swinging and jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the top of the first, knocking off Tunstall 10-5 in a Region IV softball tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday.

    The Cavaliers (19-5) registered eight hits among their first 10 batters, including RBI singles from Lillie Kimble and Ragan Halsey plus a three-run double by Jordan Nunn.

    The double-digit cushion came in handy as Carroll County managed just two base hits the rest of the afternoon.
