  • Blue Devils roll over Trojans

    SPARTA, N.C. – Grayson County put on another offensive show last Friday night when the Blue Devils opened the season with a 55-12 victory over the Alleghany Trojans in a nondistrict game.

    The Blue Devils made it look easy as they built up a 20-0 lead after the first period and led 48-6 at halftime.

    Grayson wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, which wasn’t working and the referees had to keep the time on the field.

  • H.S. FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Cavaliers a blend of experienced, unproven

    HILLSVILLE –– Visitors to Tommy Thompson Field will notice a few changes this year. New bleachers adorn the visitors’ side of the stadium and a new lighting system will illuminate the playing field.

    Less obvious is the revolving door on the offensive line.

    For the second year in a row, Carroll County finds itself ushering in a new group of offensive linemen, although circumstances don’t seem quite as dire as a year ago.

  • H.S. FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Galax looking to build on last year's success

    One of the great things about football is that, more so than in any other sport, before one season is over you find yourself already talking about the next.

    A young 2010 Galax team hadn’t even finished its 9-4, Region C Division 1 runner-up season before folks were already looking forward to 2011. It would have been fairly easy for second-year Maroon Tide coach Mark Dixon to try to schedule his team into a chance at a 10-0 or 9-1 record, but after a long period of scheduling to look better, Galax has scheduled to become better.

    INDEPENDENCE –– They’re out there.

    With all the buzz about playoff changes and Graham entering the Mountain Empire District and Galax’s prospects for a tremendous year, Grayson County is out there somewhere, avoiding much of the attention, quietly flying under the radar.

  • Cavaliers face young, big Bengals

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County opened its 2010 season last year with a loss to Bassett, but avenged itself 10 weeks later by ending the Bengals’ season in the Region IV Division 4 playoffs.

    The Cavaliers are hoping to get it right the first time this year.

    After a disappointing showing in a 36-7 benefit game loss at Galax last week, Carroll County opens its 2011 season for real tonight when the Cavaliers head down to Henry County for a nondistrict battle with the Bengals.

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County opens its 2011 schedule Friday with a trip to Sparta for a nondistrict game against Alleghany, N.C. First, the Blue Devils must get their collective heads to stop spinning after Friday’s wild benefit game win in Floyd.

  • Twin County volleyball preview

    GALAX

    In her 31 years coaching Galax High School’s varsity volleyball program, Rose Houk has seen a season end one match too early one time too often. Three years ago, the Tide was ousted from the postseason with Houk sitting at 299 career wins. Last year, Galax’s season came one short of Houk’s career win No. 340, which will earn career milestone recognition from the Virginia High School Coaches’ Association.

  • Grayson County rips into Floyd County 64-40

    FLOYD – It sounds like a basketball score but it was actually the first football game of the season between Grayson County and Floyd County.

    When the dust settled, the Blue Devils came away with a 64-40 victory in a benefit game that doesn’t count in the regular season record.

    But the players approached the game as the opportunity to open the season with a victory and build some momentum for this Friday night’s opening game against the Alleghany Trojans in Sparta, N.C.

  • Galax off to solid start

     DRAPER –– Galax golf coach Terry Snow probably got a pretty good idea of how stout his team could be after a scrimmage last week netted a team score of 1-under par.

    Monday’s events have only fueled his optimism.

    The Maroon Tide turned in a solid four-man team score of 295 to win the Draper Valley Prep Classic, a 15-team season-opening event held at the 6,414-yard par-72 Draper Valley Golf Club.
