  • Area volleyball teams pick up victories

     BLUEFIELD –– Galax gave Graham a rude welcome to the Mountain Empire District volleyball scene, rolling to a 25-10, 25-10, 25-7 win Thursday night.

    Allison White led the Maroon Tide (4-1, 1-0) at the net with 10 kills and a pair of blocks, Paige Hanks had five aces among her 12 serving points and Grace Wilson had nine assists and seven points.

    Bailey Shumate, Taylor Bryant and Harley Brewer combined for 15 kills and Carolyn Vaughan served for 10 points.

  • Motley and crew dominate Cavs

    HILLSVILLE—Christiansburg scored on its first six possessions Friday night en route to a 52-13 thrashing of Carroll County at Tommy Thompson Field.

    The Cavaliers (0-3) were pushed around on both offense and defense and managed only 21 yards in the first half before putting up two scores in the second half against the reserves.

    Virginia Tech commit Brenden Motley wasted no time putting the Blue Demons on the board following a three-and-out by the Cavalier offense.

  • Grayson slams Indians 52-13

    RURAL RETREAT – When two undefeated teams clash on the football field, one has to come away a loser.

    The loser last Friday night was Rural Retreat after Grayson County rolled into Indian country and came away with a 52-13 nondistrict victory for the Blue Devils.

    Grayson County set the tone of the game early when Zack Vaughan took the opening kickoff and, after some nifty running and breaking tackles, rambled 73 yards for the touchdown with only 16 seconds ticked off the clock. Mario Ruiz kicked the extra point for the 7-0 lead.

  • Degree of difficulty increases for Cavs

    HILLSVILLE –– Imagine Carroll County’s football season in terms of a linear graph. The blue line is the level of improvement shown by the Cavaliers. The red line is the level of the competition the team faces from week to week.

    While the blue line is on an inclined plane, unfortunately, so is the red one. For now, the Cavaliers are holding out for the day those two lines intersect.

  • Devils, Indians looking for 3-0

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County and Rural Retreat will both seek to improve to 3-0 on the year tonight when the two meet for a nondistrict game at Rural Retreat Community Stadium.

    While both teams put up some impressive offensive numbers, what stands out about last week’s action was the defensive job done by the Blue Devils in their 40-7 win over Chilhowie.

  • Galax surges to win over Floyd

    There was thunder and lightning on the field Friday night as Galax coasted to its first win over nearby rival Floyd County since 1995, taking a 37-21 nondistrict win.

    Summer storms delayed the kickoff by 30 minutes, but the thunderous running of Tide senior Jordan Vaughan coupled with the lightning fast speed of Donte Peoples was too much for the Buffaloes.

    Floyd County (0-2) appeared ready to put up a fight against Galax, stopping the Maroon Tide on its opening possession and quickly putting up seven points of its own.

  • Blue Devils face tough task

    INDEPENDENCE –– By his own admission, Brett McPherson would be crazy to not be happy with where his football team is right now.

    Including its benefit game, Grayson County has lit up the scoreboard to the tune of 119 points the last two Fridays. A wretched defensive effort in that benefit game was followed by the Blue Devils locking down (albeit against a vastly overmanned opponent) in the season opener, a 55-12 win over Alleghany.

  • Tide welcomes Floyd back to town

    After a four-year hiatus, one of the longer-running rivalries in this part of the state will resume tonight when Floyd County travels to Galax for a nondistrict game in what will be the Maroon Tide’s 2011 home opener.

    After a pair of sub-par efforts on their home turf, the Buffaloes are probably hoping a change of scenery will do them good.

  • Carroll, Mt. Airy to finally meet on football field

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County High School and Mount Airy Senior High have been sitting just 21 miles apart for more than 40 years without their varsity football players ever having stood across the field from one another.

    That will change this week.

    A rivalry that never was but should have been will finally kick off Friday when the Granite Bears chug up Fancy Gap Mountain for a nondistrict game at Tommy Thompson Field.

  • Houk reaches milestone as Tide opens with win

    Galax opened its volleyball season with a convincing three-set win over Rural Retreat, knocking off the Indians 25-16, 25-20, 25-12 in a nondistrict match Thursday.

    Haley Reynolds had 11 service points and four aces to lead the Maroon Tide. Bailey Shumate added 10 assists, 10 points and six kills while Harley Brewer had three blocks.

    It was another landmark win for Maroon Tide coach Rose Houk, who reached Virginia High School Coaches’ Association milestone win No. 340.

    Galax travels to Carroll County on Monday.
