  • Blue Devils heat up for 3-1 win

    MAX MEADOWS –– One can tell that it’s October in Southwest Virginia when the heater is on in the morning and the air conditioning runs in the afternoon.

    Grayson County’s volleyball team knows the feeling.

    Unstoppable at times and ungainly for a stretch or two as well Tuesday night, the hot and cold-running Blue Devils were on more often than not in taking a 25-22, 21-25, 25-12, 25-20 win over Fort Chiswell in a Mountain Empire District match.

  • Cavaliers get second chance as SWD play begins at Abingdon

    HILLSVILLE –– The first half of Carroll County’s 2011 football schedule can be likened to standing in the on-deck circle before a plate appearance. Through five nondistrict games, the Cavaliers have been swinging the weighted bat, facing a lineup of teams that were very good, very athletic or very both, in preparation for the homestretch of district games.

    Carroll County gets to drop the donut tonight and step up to the plate.

  • Pioneers not to be taken lightly

    Each week, and a little more enthusiastically every time Grayson County and Galax churn out another win, it comes up in conversation.

    The subject of the discussion? November 4, of course. Galax vs. Grayson. Last night of the regular season. Two teams at 9-0.

    One thing’s for sure: such talk in either locker room will earn somebody knot on the back of the head.

  • Devils welcome Graham to neighborhood

    INDEPENDENCE –– If the Division 2 Western Section playoffs started this week, top-seeded Grayson County would open the postseason with a home game against No. 16 Graham.

    Of course the playoffs don’t start tonight. But it’ll soon be known what would happen if they did.

    The G-Men and the Blue Devils kick off the district portion of schedules tonight at Bill Strong Field as one of the more storied football programs in Southwest Virginia makes its Mountain Empire District debut.

  • Maroon Tide runners shine in Charlotte

     CHARLOTTE, N.C. –– Despite missing several runners due to SAT testing, Galax still enjoyed its most successful trip ever to the prestigious Wendy’s Cross Country Classic at McAlpine Park.

    The Maroon Tide girls placed eighth and Galax’s boys were 12th in an event that drew 31 teams Saturday, with two Tide runners earning medalist honors.

  • Cavs face talented but shaky Bulldogs

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County could quite conceivably be sporting a 3-1 record right now. Martinsville has as much athletic ability as any team in this end of the state.

    Call it the game of the week among teams with a combined 1-7 record.

    For a myriad of reasons, the Cavaliers (0-4) and the Bulldogs (1-3) just haven’t gotten it done in the win column so far this year, but one of the two will add a W tonight when they meet for a nondistrict game at Dan Green Stadium.

  • Richlands stuns Carroll County

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County dominated early but faded down the stretch and suffered a rare Southwest District volleyball defeat Tuesday night, falling to Richlands 12-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-9.

    Defeated soundly in the first two sets, Richlands came to life in the third and won the final three sets to eke out the win. Carroll County (7-4 overall, 0-1 district) was on its way to a 3-0 match win, leading 11-9 in the third set, when the Blue Tornado went on a 9-1 run to take control.

  • Maroon Tide finishes strong at own invitational

    HILLSVILLE –– More than 400 runners representing 24 schools made the 2011 Maroon Tide Invitational cross country meet the largest in its 18-year history, giving more credence to the fact that the Galax varsity teams had their best showings in a decade.

    The 3.1-mile Southwestern Virginia Training Center course will host the Region C meet in a few weeks, making the event an attractive stop on the cross country circuit for several Southwest Virginia schools.

  • Huge half propels Galax to win

     NEW CASTLE –– Galax rolled to a 49-0 halftime lead and remained undefeated on the year, swamping Craig County 49-14 in a nondistrict game Friday night.

    The Maroon Tide (5-0) got one big play after another in the high-scoring first half, starting with its special teams. After holding the Rockets (2-3) to a three-and-out, Galax was on the board the first time it touched the ball when Deion George returned a Craig County punt 77 yards for a touchdown. Eli Brady knocked through the first of his seven PAT kicks for a quick 7-0 Galax lead.

  • Galax golfers continue winning ways

     DRAPER –– The Galax golf team continued to rack up the wins last week, taking a pair of three-team matches on Tuesday and Thursday.

    Thursday at Draper Valley Golf Club, the Maroon Tide shot a composite 152 to defeat Grayson County (185) and host Fort Chiswell (209).

    John Bryant was low man for Galax, overcoming rainy, chilly conditions to turn in an even-par 36 on the front nine. Matt Downey was a single stroke back at 37 while Ben Hill (39) and Eddie Hanks (40) were also strong.
