As much as this game means to the two communities involved, as big as it has become these past few weeks – even far beyond the Twin Counties – and considering that both teams find themselves at the same time where neither has been before, it’s still just a game played by kids.

Twenty-two at a time, kids will play a game in front of what is likely to be the biggest crowd they’ll ever play before.

 Allison White has put up player of the year-type numbers her whole career. She can finally put up a player of the year-type plaque.

White was named the Mountain Empire District’s top volleyball player, voted upon by the league’s coaches and announced at the conclusion of Saturday’s district tournament.

A senior middle hitter, White headlined first team heavy with Maroon Tide players, joining teammates Harley Brewer, Bailey Shumate and Grace Wilson on the seven-person squad, along with coach of the year Rose Houk.

 You kind of knew it was going to happen.

Weeks ago, especially after the night of Sept. 16, you just knew, because this season had that feel about it. You knew deep down inside that Grayson County and Galax would make it to their meeting with one another this Friday, both sporting 9-0 records, even if it took a miracle along the way.

INDEPENDENCE – It was a rainy, cold night Friday night but it didn’t make any difference to the Grayson County Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils rolled over Narrows 48-6 in a key Mountain Empire District game that kept them undefeated and tied with Galax for first place.
