  • Blue Devils back in the mix

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County ended Galax’s string of 44 straight wins against Mountain Empire District competition Thursday, surging to a big lead in the fifth set and holding off the Maroon Tide 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-8.

    The win gives the Blue Devils (6-1 overall, 3-0 district) the early MED lead. Galax’s first MED loss since 2008 dropped the Tide to 7-1, 2-1.

  • Clintwood gets last laugh, 49-7

    CLINTWOOD –– A year after one of the most humiliating defeats in the long history of a storied football program, Clintwood can now turn the page.

    The Green Wave had Friday, Sept. 17 circled on its calendar ever since giving up 58 first-half points in a 61-6 loss at Grayson County last year and can now get down to the business of defending its 2011 state championship after thoroughly dismantling the Blue Devils 49-7 in a nondistrict game at Ralph Cummins Stadium.

  • Carroll deals Devils first loss

    INDEPENDENCE –– With three losses in its first six matches, a young Carroll County team hasn’t exactly found smooth sailing through the nondistrict portion of its schedule. But the Cavaliers were able to pull off something no other team has been able to do thus far in the season.

    Carroll County bounced back from a first-set loss and took three straight tightly-contested games to hand Grayson County its first defeat of the season, leaving town with a 19-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 win in a nondistrict match Monday night.

  • Carroll County girls get back to .500

     HILLSVILLE –– After trading blowouts in the first two sets, Carroll County and Christiansburg finished with a pair of nailbiters, including an incredible 34-32 fourth set as the Cavaliers edged the Blue Demons in a nondistrict volleyball match Wednesday.

    Jessica Sheek and Eustacia Smith each had 15 kills as Carroll took the 25-12, 16-25, 25-22, 34-32 win. Megan Alderman put up 20 assists while Smith and Sheek combined for seven blocks.

  • C’burg ground game too much for Cavs

     CHRISTIANSBURG ––  De’Quan Green-Gause rushed for 153 yards and four touchdowns on nine carries to lead the Blue Demons (3-0) over the Cavaliers (0-3).

    Joey Augustin ran for 142 yards and two TDs on 11 carries for Christiansburg.

    Conner Lundy completed 21 of 39 passes for 289 yards and one TD for Carroll County. He also ran for a touchdown. Teammate Chris Smoot had nine catches for 131 yards.

  • Devils 3-0 after downing Tribe

    INDEPENDENCE – Grayson County was favored by three touchdowns to beat Rural Retreat last Friday night but the Blue Devils actually had to come from behind before turning the game into a blowout and claiming the 48-19 nondistrict victory at Bill Strong Field.

    The Blue Devils had the first chance after advancing the kickoff to their own 31. They failed to move the ball and were forced to punt.

  • Tide can’t overcome deficit

     FLOYD –– Galax cut a 20-0  gap to six points in the third quarter but couldn’t complete the comeback and dropped a 33-14 nondistrict loss Friday to Floyd County.

    Donte Peoples scored on runs of 5 and 2 yards as the Maroon Tide (1-1) pulled to within 20-14 entering the fourth quarter.

    The Buffaloes (1-1) responded with a 51-yard touchdown pass from Matt Bary to Cole Worrell, and Dorian Harris iced the win with a 53-yard interception return.

  • Grayson Co. holds off Chilhowie

     CHILHOWIE –– An odd turn of events on a free kick following a safety helped lead to a strong finish for Grayson County, which held on the defeat Chilhowie 35-21 in a nondistrict game Friday night.

    Grayson County (2-0) led just 14-12 early in the fourth quarter and was ahead 21-12 when a fumble in its own end zone resulted in a safety and a 21-14 game with 5:40 to go.

  • Grayson, Galax volleyball teams still unbeaten

     Galax ran its season-opening win streak to five matches Tuesday, drilling Pulaski County 25-10, 25-23, 25-15 in a nondistrict volleyball match in Galax.

    The Maroon Tide (5-0) got 13 kills and seven digs from Morgan Neff while Susan Davis added 15 assists and 13 digs. Haley Reynolds served for five aces for Galax.

    Grayson Co. 3, Rural Retreat 0: The Blue Devils also remained undefeated on the young season with a 25-9, 25-8, 25-14 nondistrict win Tuesday in Rural Retreat.

  • TONIGHT’S GAMES

    Rural Retreat at Grayson County

    Preseason optimism was dampened when Rural Retreat opened with a disappointing 34-0 loss at Fort Chiswell. The Indians (1-1) rebounded at Bland County with a 42-6 win and will tackle their third straight Mountain Empire District foe when they travel to Independence to face the Blue Devils (2-0).

    Rural Retreat threw rarely but effectively against the Bears as J.B. Wright hit all six of his passes for 160 yards and a pair of scores. T.C. Caudill added 96 rushing yards for the Indians.
