  • Cavaliers host SWD kingpin

    HILLSVILLE –– After six weeks and five losses – including four painfully close misses – Carroll County finally got to walk off the field smiling last week.

    Making it two in a row will be a tall task indeed.

    Seven-time defending district champion Richlands (7-0 overall, 1-0 district) rumbles into town tonight sporting a 23-game Southwest District winning streak as it takes on Carroll County (1-5, 1-0). The Blue Tornadoes are 35-1 in district play since a 16-6 loss to Carroll County in 2003.

  • Maroon Tide, G-Men to tangle for first time

    For a guy with an NFL background coaching the third highest-rated Group A team in the western half of Virginia, Mark Dixon’s credibility has taken a beating the past month or so. 

    That’s part of the reason Galax has constructed a VHSL rating that stands behind only Grayson County and J.I. Burton in the Western Division.

    Dixon fully expected a battle with Radford a few weeks ago. The result? A 43-0 Tide win. He all but stated last week that he wouldn’t be surprised if Fort Chiswell ruined Galax’s spotless record Friday. Boom: 52-0.

  • Cavaliers rally past Falcons for first district win

     HILLSVILLE –– It took Carroll County a game to get it going but the Cavaliers stormed from behind to pick up their first Southwest District win, 24-26, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20 Thursday over Abingdon.

    The Falcons jumped out to a huge lead in the first set before Carroll County (8-5 overall, 1-2 district) tied the game at 23-all. Abingdon won the final two points to take the first set but the momentum from the comeback stayed with the Cavaliers, who evened the match with a 25-16 second-set win.

  • Cavs stymie Falcons for first win

     ABINGDON –– From a six-week winless stretch to atop the district standings in one week, Carroll County finally can smile after a close ballgame.

    The Cavaliers scored on two big plays, one at the beginning of each half, and held on to knock off Abingdon 16-3 in the Southwest District opener for both teams.

  • Devils give G-Men rude welcome

     INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County led 7-3 early in the first quarter before exploding for 28 unanswered points by the half, and the Blue Devils rolled to a 41-3 win over Graham in a Mountain Empire District game Friday.

    Fullback Darren Anderson broke free on a 74-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Grayson County lead 41 seconds into the game, but Graham (2-4 overall, 0-1 MED) answered with a 34-yard field goal by Samuel Stowers three minutes later.

    The rest of the half belonged to Grayson County, starting with the ensuing kickoff.

  • Blue Devils heat up for 3-1 win

    MAX MEADOWS –– One can tell that it’s October in Southwest Virginia when the heater is on in the morning and the air conditioning runs in the afternoon.

    Grayson County’s volleyball team knows the feeling.

    Unstoppable at times and ungainly for a stretch or two as well Tuesday night, the hot and cold-running Blue Devils were on more often than not in taking a 25-22, 21-25, 25-12, 25-20 win over Fort Chiswell in a Mountain Empire District match.

  • Cavaliers get second chance as SWD play begins at Abingdon

    HILLSVILLE –– The first half of Carroll County’s 2011 football schedule can be likened to standing in the on-deck circle before a plate appearance. Through five nondistrict games, the Cavaliers have been swinging the weighted bat, facing a lineup of teams that were very good, very athletic or very both, in preparation for the homestretch of district games.

    Carroll County gets to drop the donut tonight and step up to the plate.

  • Pioneers not to be taken lightly

    Each week, and a little more enthusiastically every time Grayson County and Galax churn out another win, it comes up in conversation.

    The subject of the discussion? November 4, of course. Galax vs. Grayson. Last night of the regular season. Two teams at 9-0.

    One thing’s for sure: such talk in either locker room will earn somebody knot on the back of the head.

  • Devils welcome Graham to neighborhood

    INDEPENDENCE –– If the Division 2 Western Section playoffs started this week, top-seeded Grayson County would open the postseason with a home game against No. 16 Graham.

    Of course the playoffs don’t start tonight. But it’ll soon be known what would happen if they did.

    The G-Men and the Blue Devils kick off the district portion of schedules tonight at Bill Strong Field as one of the more storied football programs in Southwest Virginia makes its Mountain Empire District debut.

  • Maroon Tide runners shine in Charlotte

     CHARLOTTE, N.C. –– Despite missing several runners due to SAT testing, Galax still enjoyed its most successful trip ever to the prestigious Wendy’s Cross Country Classic at McAlpine Park.

    The Maroon Tide girls placed eighth and Galax’s boys were 12th in an event that drew 31 teams Saturday, with two Tide runners earning medalist honors.
