  • Carroll County caps season with 48-6 win

     STUART –– Carroll County gave up an early touchdown and responded with 48 unanswered points, finishing its season with a 48-6 nondistrict win Friday over Patrick County.

    Patrick County (0-10) scored on the third play of the game before the Cavaliers (3-7) took over. Logan Hodges scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and Patrick Davis added another for a 20-6 lead. Carroll stopped a Patrick drive with less than a minute left in the first half when Davis came up with an interception inside the Cavalier 5-yard line.

  • Hidden Valley eliminates Cavs

    HILLSVILLE – Entering the Region IV volleyball tournament as one of the lower seeds, Carroll County was fortunate not to draw overall No. 1 Cave Spring. The consolation was minimal, though, as the Cavaliers got a date with the last team Cave Spring lost to. 

    Hidden Valley, fresh off a win over the Knights in the River Ridge tournament finals, needed less than an hour to dispatch the Cavaliers, coasting to a 25-15, 25-5, 25-11 win in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

  • Tide opens playoffs with Holston

    In the smallest division of Virginia high school football, there are only a handful of programs in the state that can say that they are ‘there’ every year. The rest of the Division 1 world is cyclical.

    Last year, Eastern Montgomery was at its apex. This year, it’s Galax. Two years ago, Holston was the one riding high.

    Two of the most recent upswingers will meet tonight when top-seeded Galax hosts No. 16 Holston in the opening round of the Division 1 Western Section playoffs at Galax High School.

    INDEPENDENCE –– When the new sectional playoff format for Group A football was announced, one of the more appealing aspects of the system was the possibility of facing a new, unfamiliar opponent in the postseason.

  • VHSL PLAYOFF PAIRINGS

    Two rules of playoff football are (1) never look past your next opponent, and (2) it’s impossible to obey rule No. 1.
    According to the official VHSL pairings released Sunday evening, No. 1 Galax will host No. 16 Holston on Friday night in the opening round of the Division 1 Western Section playoffs, while No. 2 Grayson County will host a rematch with No. 15 Graham in the Division 2 first round Friday.

  • GHS@GCHS – Grayson preview

    INDEPENDENCE –– Brett McPherson has been involved with some very big high school football games. As an assistant coach at William Monroe he was part of a state championship team in 1991, and he was also a part of a team that ended Lunenburg Central’s string of eight-plus years without a regular season loss.

    This tops them all.

    “Kind of like Halleys Comet. It comes around once every 75 years or so,” McPherson said Monday.

  • GHS@GCHS – Galax preview

    One of the greatest compliments that Galax coach Mark Dixon has paid his players is that he’s never seen a moment be too big for them. Though he’s said as much numerous times throughout this magical year, the biggest moment yet is a couple of days away.

    The Maroon Tide will put its 9-0 record up against Grayson County’s 9-0 mark Friday when the two clash for the Mountain Empire District championship Friday at Bill Strong Field.

    Like his counterpart Brett McPherson in Independence, the feeling was palpable to Dixon on Monday.

  • GHS@GCHS – Game-day parking, post-game activity information

    INDEPENDENCE –– An overflow crowd is expected to attend this Friday night’s game between the Grayson County Blue Devils and the Galax Maroon Tide with the Mountain Empire District championship on the line. 

    Grayson County Athletic Director Chad Wright has passed on some information to help fans get into the stadium and, most importantly, find a parking place.

  • GHS@GCHS – Just how big is this game, anyway?

    Somebody is going home with the Mountain Empire District football champion’s trophy tonight. It has a nice, solid foundation and it’s real shiny and it will look good on a shelf. It’s also hollow.

    The game could match that description as well.

    As huge as the meeting between 9-0 Galax and 9-0 Grayson County really is, and this is no attempt to downplay it – because it is huge – not a great deal rides on the outcome.
