  • CLINTWOOD-GALAX: A little Grayson County has stuck with both Galax and Clintwood

    One team comes from the coalfields, the other from a mill town. One is known primarily for its size and power, the other for its speed and quick-strike ability. One has a winning tradition dating back for generations, the other is treading on entirely new ground.

    Yet Clintwood and Galax are linked by one common thread – having spent few Friday night hours in friendly downtown Independence this fall.

    Well, that and the fact that they’ll meet one another in the state championship game Saturday.

Breaking through a barrier like it was made of paper, he veered left into the open field, careful not to mishandle the cargo his teammates had entrusted him to carry in his right hand. A gang of players was running behind him.

  • CLINTWOOD-GALAX: Clintwood carries banner of Lonesome Pine District into state finals.

    If one thing stands out about Lonesome Pine District football in general, it is the tradition.

    From the athletic tape on the front of each Clintwood player’s helmet scrawled with ‘LPD PRIDE’ to the fact that the official Clintwood roster includes the names and numbers of former players who have had their numbers retired, all the way back to 1949, to the fact that the school has had all of three head football coaches since 1953, it’s just a football culture to be found in the pocket communities that dot Virginia’s far-southwest mountains.

  • Cavs hammer Cougars in season opener

     STUART –– Carroll County jumped out to a 14-point lead after the first quarter and opened its 2011-12 season by pasting Patrick County 75-22 in a nondistrict game Monday.

    The Cavaliers held the Cougars (0-1) to six total points in the middle two periods, leading 42-13 at halftime and 63-15 entering the fourth quarter.

    Eight different Cavaliers scored between six and 12 points, led by Wes Smoot’s 12.

  • Hiatt’s shot sinks Patrick for Cavaliers

    HILLSVILLE –– As the first light snow of the season was falling outside the Carroll County gym Tuesday evening, the first shots of the basketball season weren’t. But despite what could be one of Carroll’s better offensive teams in years managing just 35 points, Emily Hiatt sank the two that mattered.

    Hiatt’s slashing layup with less than five seconds to play spelled the difference as the Cavaliers opened their 2011-12 season with a 35-33 nondistrict win over Patrick County.

  • White named to all-region team

     Galax’s Allison White leads a list of six Twin County volleyball players earning all-region recognition, and Carroll County’s Autumn Fink has earned a spot on the all-Southwest District team.

    White, a senior middle hitter, was voted to the all-Region C first team after helping lead the Maroon Tide to a region Division 1 runner-up finish and a spot in the state semifinals.

    Teammates Harley Brewer, Grace Wilson and Bailey Shumate were also honored, as were Grayson County’s Natasha Moore and Brandi Goad.

  • Cockerham among Emory & Henry honorees

     EMORY –– Former Galax High School volleyball standout Jamie Cockerham has been named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s second-team all-conference squad, ODAC officials announced recently. The all-ODAC teams are selected by the league’s 11 head coaches.

  • XC runners wrap up season

     THE PLAINS –– Galax managed a ninth-place finish in the boys’ team standings while three Twin County girls gave solid individual efforts at the Group A state cross country championships Nov. 12 at Great Meadows.

    The Maroon Tide boys were one point behind Floyd County for eighth position as Region C fared well in the team standings. Fielding just five runners, Parry McCluer (113 points) was a solid second place behind team champion George Mason (65).

  • Turnovers plague Grayson in loss to Dan River

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County had made a living all year by making opponents pay for their mistakes. The Blue Devils’ season came to an end by the same means.

    Entering the second round of the Western Section Division 2 playoffs with a plus-23 turnover ratio, Grayson County gave the ball away five times Friday night, leading to a 31-20 loss to Dan River at Bill Strong Field.

  • 33-point explosion lifts Maroon Tide to 60-24 win

    Galax rebounded from a slow start Friday and scored on five straight possessions to take home its 12th consecutive win, dominating Castlewood 60-24 in the Western Section Division 1 playoffs.

    The top-seeded Maroon Tide (12-0) advances to the third round, where it will face the winner of Saturday’s Honaker-J.I. Burton game without one of its top two-way players – Steven Peoples.
