  • Cavs 3-for-3 against Grayson

    HILLSVILLE –– With Grayson County comprising one-third of Carroll County’s nine-game schedule thus far, the Cavaliers are probably ready to see a fresh face across the court for a change. With three losses to Carroll County in Grayson's last five games, the Blue Devils are probably downright sick of the Cavaliers.

    The third meeting in the last 19 days between the two schools produced the same result as the first two as the Cavaliers swept the season series with a 68-51 win in a nondistrict game Wednesday night.

  • Tide, Cavaliers pound Tazewell

     TAZEWELL –– Galax obliterated Tazewell in the first and fourth quarters, rolling to a nondistrict 79-56 win Wednesday over the Bulldogs.

    The Maroon Tide (4-0) jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one quarter of play and finished the game by dominating the fourth period 24-9.

    Five players hit double figures for the Maroon Tide, led by Austin Pack and Lawrence Parsons with 18 points each. Devonte McKinney scored 13 points while Deion George and Eddie Hanks chipped in 12 points each.

  • VHSL poised for shift to 6-division system

    CHARLOTTESVILLE ––The Virginia High School League is a big step closer to moving from three classifications to six while significantly reshaping current district alignments, beginning in the 2013-14 school year.

    An ad hoc task force of the VHSL Executive Committee on Wednesday released data from a Dec. 19 meeting that sets parameters for the first major realignment of VHSL schools since 1970, when the league adopted the current three-classification system.

  • Fort knocks off Blue Devils

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County’s Mountain Empire District schedule got off to a rough start Friday night as Fort Chiswell used a strong first quarter to fuel a 73-54 win in the MED opener for both schools.

    With the score tied at 4-4, Fort Chiswell’s Daniel Hamm got the Pioneers (9-3 overall, 1-0 district) going by draining 3-pointers on consecutive possessions. Brett Mabry knocked down another triple on Fort’s next trip down the floor and the Pioneers were off to the races as their lead grew to 11 points in less than two minutes.

  • Maroon Tide nips Alleghany in OT

     SPARTA, N.C. –– A little bit of North Surry must have rubbed off inside of those borrowed uniforms.

    One night after loaning a set of uniforms to the undefeated Lady Greyhounds, winless Alleghany took Galax to overtime before the Maroon Tide held on for a 61-58 win Wednesday in the Alleghany Shootout.

    Galax outscored the Trojans 7-5 in the extra session to salvage a 1-1 finish in the two-day event.

  • Wythe boards up Grayson en route to 75-56 win

    MAX MEADOWS –– Grayson County had hoped to rebound to a fifth-place finish in the First Bank of Virginia Tournament. The Blue Devils didn’t rebound, period.

    George Wythe dominated the backboards and relegated the Blue Devils to a sixth-place showing in the eight-team tournament with a 73-56 decision Thursday at Fort Chiswell High School.

    George Wythe (3-3) held a 3-to-1 advantage on the boards at one point late in the third quarter and finished with a 54-24 rebounding advantage.

  • Maroon Tide edges Cavs by three

    HILLSVILLE –– Calling the Galax-Carroll County girls’ basketball game Wednesday ‘ugly’ would be doing a disservice to homely people everywhere.

    The ‘W’ Galax took home was attractive enough, though.

    The Maroon Tide picked up a rare win over Carroll County despite managing just 33 points on 13-of-41 shooting, toppling the Southwest District frontrunner 33-30 in a nondistrict game Wednesday night.

  • Maroon Tide tops pair of Carolina teams

     SPARTA, N.C. –– Galax bounced back from a slow start and ran past North Surry, N.C. 59-48 Tuesday to open a successful venture in the Alleghany Invitational at Alleghany County High School.

    Down by double figures in the first half, the Maroon Tide (2-0) rallied to take a 30-29 lead by halftime, then gradually pulled away in the second half.

    Lawrence Parsons led the way for Galax with 19 points, Deion George scored 13 and Devonte McKinney tossed in 10 points for the Maroon Tide.

  • Galax gets through opener

    DUBLIN –– Intermittently, Galax showed flashes of both a defending state champion and a team that had hadn’t been playing basketball but nine days.

    The Maroon Tide’s run to the state title game in football left barely enough basketball players for five weeks to run a decent three-man weave, but the reigning Group A Division 1 state hoops champ finally played its much-delayed season opener on the hardwood Friday with a 51-48 nondistrict win over Pulaski County.

  • Floyd County hands Carroll girls their first loss, 58-47

     HILLSVILLE –– Floyd County rallied from a five-point halftime deficit behind the hot shooting of Krista Cox and dealt Carroll County its first loss of the season, 58-47, in a nondistrict game Friday.

    The Cavaliers had opened the season with six straight wins and led 30-25 at intermission, but Cox sank four 3-pointers in the second half as the Buffaloes (7-1) outscored Carroll County 33-17 over the final two quarters.

    Cox hit six 3-pointers in all and finished with a game-high 20 points. Maria Kuchenbuch scored 13 for Floyd County.
