  • Highlanders end Grayson doubles, team tennis season

RADFORD –– With Grayson County having won five of the first six games in the first set of the Region C boys’ tennis doubles championship Wednesday, one might have wondered just how fast the thing was going to be over with.

As it turned out, Glenvar got it over with pretty quickly.

The Highlander duo of Alex Dunkenberger and Colton Walls reeled off 11 straight games, then fended off a comeback attempt by Grayson’s Garrett Bailey and Mike Vaughan to win the title 7-5, 6-4 on the Dedmon Center courts.

  • Blue Devils roll to tournament title

Grayson County’s seniors graduated Friday night. They commenced to win a district tournament Saturday morning.

Led by a 3-for-4, three-RBI day from (very) recent graduate Lucas Rudy, the Blue Devils held off Galax 6-1 and claimed the Mountain Empire District baseball tournament title after an 11 a.m. start at Felts Park. The championship matches the season crown won by Grayson, which improved to 16-5 with the win. Season runner-up Galax dropped to 12-10 with the loss.

  • Maroon Tide wins another in the 7th

Galax won for the fourth time this season against Narrows, for the second time in four days, and for the third time by two runs or less.

This one was by far the most dramatic.

With the season on the line and trailing 10-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the Maroon Tide scored six times to rally for the Region C Division 1 quarterfinal win Monday at Felts Park.

  • Devils, Tide cruise into finals

It took six days to do a three-day job, but Galax and Grayson County met Saturday for the MED tournament championship after making quick work of their semifinal opponents Friday in the Mountain Empire District baseball tournament at wind-whipped Felts Park.

Grayson County pulled away from Fort Chiswell for a 10-0, six-inning win in the first semifinal, while in the second semifinal, Galax twice answered Narrows threats with big rallies of its own in an 11-5 win.

  • Tide blanks G-girls to reach semis

After a nondescript start, Galax finished strong in its Mountain Empire District quarterfinal win over Graham. Kinda like the Maroon Tide’s season in general.

Having started the season by dropping 10 of its first 13 games, and having seen its first six batters retired in order on Monday, Galax won for the fifth time in its last seven outings by coming on strong in the third and fourth innings, blowing past Graham 10-0 in a five-inning game at Mountain View Park.

  • MED baseball and softball tournaments suspended

The semifinal rounds of the Mountain Empire District baseball and softball tournaments were both suspended Wednesday due to the thunderstorm that swept through the area. In softball, Galax led Fort Chiswell 6-3 with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning when play was halted two outs short of an official game. Play resumed Thursday at the point where it was stopped.

In baseball, Grayson County led Fort Chiswell 3-0 in the bottom of the second when the game was suspended. It, too, was resumed Thursday at the point which the game was halted.

  • Carroll girls edge Martinsville in Region IV tennis

MARTINSVILLE –– Carroll County took two of the three doubles matches and three of the five completed singles matches to get past Martinsville 5-3 in the quarterfinals Tuesday of the Region IV girls’ tennis team tournament at Martinsville High School.

The Cavaliers’ Cassidi McCann and Kelly Lundy defeated Kate Dietrich and Hannah LaPrade 6-3, 6-4 and teammates Sarah Light and Kirstin Robinson downed the Bulldog duo of Violet Mazurek and Ashleigh Buck 6-1, 6-2 for a 2-1 Carroll team advantage entering singles play.

  • Galax finishes strong, slugs four HRs in win over Wave

NARROWS –– Galax won its third straight outing, unloading for four home runs and 14 base hits in a 14-5 Mountain Empire District softball win Thursday over Narrows.

Taylor Ashworth started the power surge for the Maroon Tide (7-11) with a two-run shot in the top of the first. Taylor Cummings and Holly Cassell each smacked a solo homer in the top of the third, and Cassell added a grand slam in the fourth inning as Galax took a 9-1 lead.

  • Maroon Tide girls win two; Galax soccer now 15-0

Galax scored nine of its 10 runs in the third and fourth innings and cruised to a 10-1 win over Fort Chiswell in a Mountain Empire District game Wednesday at Mountain View Park.

Leading 1-0 entering the bottom of the third, the Maroon Tide used a two-run Taylor Ashworth home run to highlight a four-run outburst.

Galax (6-11 overall, 5-3 district) added five runs in the fourth, doing all the damage with two outs. Ashworth and Morgan Neff each had an RBI double in the big inning.
