  • Patrick Co. topples Cavaliers in 9

    HILLSVILLE –– Briana Steele connected on a game-tying, two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh and Patrick County pushed three runs across three innings later to take a 9-3 nondistrict softball win Wednesday over Carroll County.

    Carroll County (8-5) did most of its damage in a big second-inning rally, starting with a solo home run by Cheyenne Strickland, her fifth homer in two weeks. Eden Durnil later yanked a two-run double into the leftfield corner, and Ragan Halsey and Autumn Hill followed with RBI singles for a 5-1 Cavalier lead.

  • Edwards, Cavaliers blank Abingdon for key Southwest win

    ABINGDON –– Reece Edwards blanked the Southwest District preseason favorite over seven innings Tuesday night and Carroll County scratched out a 2-0 win over Abingdon.

    The Cavaliers snapped a four-game slide with the win, improving to 5-4 on the year, 1-0 in district play.

  • Galax zooms away from Cavs

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County battled Galax to a scoreless deadlock through 40 minutes but the Maroon Tide got busy with five second-half goals, blanking the Cavaliers 5-0 in a nondistrict boys’ soccer match Wednesday at Tommy Thompson Field.

    Galax had led Carroll County 6-0 at halftime of their first meeting but couldn’t penetrate the Cavalier defense through the first half Wednesday.

    The second 40 minutes were another story.

  • Cavalier girls take 4-1 win over Buffaloes

    FLOYD –– Carroll County notched a big nondistrict win and handed Floyd County its first loss of the season, taking a 4-1 win Wednesday over the Buffaloes.

    With the Cavaliers (7-3) leading 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Cheyenne Strickland launched a three-run home run for a 4-0 lead, which was more than enough for Carroll pitcher Gracie Davidson.

    The homer was the third three-run shot in two games for Strickland, who had three home runs – two of them for three runs – two days earlier in a win at Galax.

  • Galax boys open MED with win

    Galax remained perfect for the year and opened Mountain Empire District play by holding off Fort Chiswell 3-1 in a boys’ soccer match Monday at Galax High School.

    Andres Medina scored a pair of goals for the Maroon Tide, which improved to 6-0 on the season with the win.

    Mario Carranza also scored for Galax while Mesiel Solis and the Tide defense held the Pioneers to two shots on goal.

  • Galax splits with SWD foes

    Galax went 1-1 in a pair of nondistrict girls’ soccer matches against Southwest District competition, edging Marion 3-2 Monday and taking a 6-0 loss from Richlands on Tuesday, both at Galax High School.

    Cassie Richardson scored three goals in Richlands’ win, two of them on assists by Makenley Davis, as the Blue Tornadoes outshot the Maroon Tide 26-1.

    Nadia Ashiq scored two goals nine minutes apart as Richlands took a 3-0 lead into the half.

  • Maroon Tide girls pick up track and field win

    Galax held off Grayson County in the girls’ standings while Fort Chiswell’s boys nipped Grayson by a single point for the team win in a seven-team track meet Wednesday at Galax High School.

    The Maroon Tide girls got a balanced effort from sprints, distance, relays and field events to finish with 89 points, nine ahead of the Blue Devils.

    Galax claimed just one event win, posting a time of 58.9 seconds in the 4x100 relay, and picked up top-three finishes in nine events to outpoint Grayson. 

  • Grayson County sweeps in track

    HILLSVILLE –– Grayson County took both the boys’ and girls’ team wins in a four-way track and field meet Wednesday at Carroll County.

    The Blue Devil boys edged Carroll County 72-63, with Tazewell (43) third and Galax (13) fourth.

    Grayson’s girls finished with 78 points to Carroll’s 42. Tazewell (31) and Galax (11) rounded out the field.

  • Galax boys 4-0 after toppling Floyd Co.

    FLOYD –– Andres Medina scored three times for Galax, which stayed undefeated on the year after taking a 4-1 nondistrict win Monday over Floyd County.

    Medina’s hat trick came on successive goals for Galax (4-0), and Junior Espinosa capped the scoring for the Tide.

    Mario Carranza provided a pair of assists and Mesael Solis stopped four of the five shots Floyd County attempted.

  • Cav comeback comes up short

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County dug itself out of a four-run hole but couldn’t complete the comeback and dropped a 4-3 loss to Floyd County in a nondistrict game Tuesday at CCHS.

    The Buffaloes (4-0) had just scored three runs to take a 4-0 lead when the Cavaliers (1-2) began their comeback in the bottom of the fifth. Floyd pitcher Christene Phillips held Carroll County to one hit through the first four innings before issuing a leadoff walk to Tiffany Moore, who stole second and scored on a two-out single to right field by Kayla Walker.
