  • Galax, Reynolds make short work of Graham

    Thanks to a couple of big innings on offense, Galax didn’t need to be perfect on defense. The Maroon Tide came pretty close nonetheless.

    Maroon Tide pitcher Hayley Reynolds and her D allowed one baserunner in five innings and Galax kept pace with league-leading Grayson County by rolling over Graham 10-0 in a brief Mountain Empire District game Thursday at Mountain View Park.

    The Maroon Tide needed barely an hour to improve to 5-9 overall, 4-1 in the MED, one game back in the district standings.

  • Tide, Devils split key MED wins

    Galax and Grayson County split a pair of evenly-contested tennis matches Thursday, with Grayson’s boys knocking off Galax 6-3 and the Maroon Tide girls edging the Blue Devils 5-4.

    The visiting team was the winner in both matches and each has a key hurdle out of the way en route to their respective Mountain Empire District season championships.

  • Abingdon blanks Carroll County

    HILLSVILLE –– Abingdon opened with a scoring flurry and went on to hand Carroll County an 8-0 defeat in a girls’ Southwest District soccer match Tuesday at Tommy Thompson Field.

    The Falcons (7-2) got a goal every two minutes, including two by Kara Garrett, for the match’s first eight minutes and took a 6-0 lead into the half.

  • Maroon Tide sweeps in track

    Galax took both the boys’ and girls’ team wins in a nine-school track and field meet Wednesday at Galax High School.

    The Maroon Tide girls claimed seven event wins and outdistanced runner-up Narrows 99-88 in the team standings. Carroll County was third with 79, followed by Graham (72), Grayson County (36), Fort Chiswell (18), Bland County (10), Oak Hill Academy (8) and Bluefield, W.Va. (6).

    Megan Boyles and Allison White were double-winners for the Maroon Tide girls, Boyles winning the 800 and 1600-meter runs and White claiming both hurdles events.

  • Grayson claims key MED win

     INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County cleared a big early hurdle in its Mountain Empire District baseball schedule, holding off Fort Chiswell 7-6 Friday at GNB Park.

    The Blue Devils (3-6 overall, 2-0 district) led 7-4 when the Pioneers made a charge in the top of the sixth, scoring twice and loading the bases with one out before a 4-6-3 double play ended the threat. Matt Cornett retired the side in the top of the seventh for the complete game win.

  • Tazewell holds off Cavs, 4-1

    HILLSVILLE –– The start of the district baseball schedule is always worthy of attention, especially if it involves the two teams picked 1-2 in the league. Sometimes there is just a little something to make it a tad more interesting.

    Friday, it was the kid on the mound for Tazewell.

  • Falcons edge Cavs; Tide rally wasted

    ABINGDON –– A two-out, three-run rally in the third inning put Abingdon on top to stay and the Falcons held off Carroll County 7-5 in a Southwest District baseball game Tuesday night.

    With the game tied at 2-2, nobody on and two outs, Abingdon ninth-place hitter Austin Dove kept the inning going with a single, and leadoff man Jacob Meade tripled to center to drive in the go-ahead run. Meade scored on Travis Shrewsbury’s single, and Shrewsbury later scored on a wild pitch for a 5-2 Falcons lead.

  • Carroll splits pair of one-run decisions

     HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County scored twice in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead and held on to nip Pulaski County 3-2 in a nondistrict softball game Wednesday.

    Lillie Kimble doubled to drive in Lexi Hodge in the third for a 1-0 Cavalier lead. An Emily Hiatt walk and singles by Kimble and Jordan Nunn produced the two fifth inning runs.

    Kimble picked up the pitching win for the Cavaliers (8-2), striking out seven and giving up seven hits, including a solo homer by Sara Wright. Jordan Chrisley had three of the Cougars’ hits.

  • Nelson, Cavs blank Grayson

    HILLSVILLE –– Garrett Nelson made sure the only threat Carroll County faced Wednesday came from Mother Nature.

    Under menacing skies that produced a spittle of rain here and there in the middle innings, Grayson County could produce very little against the Cavalier right-hander as Carroll shut out the Blue Devils 9-0 in a nondistrict game at Bill Worrell Field.

    Other than a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning, Nelson allowed just one Blue Devil to reach second base and struck out a career-best 13 batters against just one walk.

  • White headed for Roanoke Coll.

    Part of the reason Allison White chose to continue her volleyball career at Roanoke College was that she felt she would be a name, not just a number.

    Once she’s there, it’s a safe bet that numbers will help White make a name for herself.

    White, who put up plenty of impressive digits as a four-year starter at Galax, announced her college plans last week based partly on the atmosphere of the NCAA Division III school.
