INDEPENDENCE –– There are probably worse ways to see a season come to an end. Grayson County players would have been hard-pressed to come up with one Tuesday.

Mother Nature robbed the Blue Devils of their final two at-bats, and Floyd County claimed a rare region tournament win in baseball, holding off Grayson 4-0 in five innings in a rain-shortened Region C Division 2 game at GNB Park.

Skies opened up with one out in the bottom of the sixth, and following lengthy delay, officials finally called the game at around 7:20 p.m.

Choosing a college is rarely an easy choice under any circumstances. Probably even more so for a prospective athlete, with so many unknowns involved.

Factor in the little detail that Deion George also had to choose between sports, and his decision must have really been a tough one.

But it seems one can never go wrong by picking the route George chose.

MAX MEADOWS –– In the early part of the season it was all Grayson County could do to score a run or two. Part of the problem may have been that the Blue Devils were so young, they kept stopping at third to ask, “Are we there yet?”

Starting six sophomores, Grayson is still not quite ‘there’, but the Devils are miles away from where they began the season.

The headline above a feature story in The Roanoke Times this past fall proclaimed that ‘Austin Pack doesn’t know how to quit’.

Seems like the Galax multi-sport athlete still hasn’t figured it out.

Pack, a floor leader and field general during the most successful two years in Galax High School sports history, will give it a go for four more basketball seasons, having committed recently to play for Methodist University, an NCAA Division III school located in Fayetteville, N.C.
