  • RipTide finishes third as team, wins 10 gold medals
     The Galax RipTide swim team concluded its 2010 summer swim schedule with an overall record of 8-5, placing third out of seven teams in the season-ending Blue Ridge Swim League conference meet. “We accomplished a lot this season,” said RipTide coach Trace Lumpkin. “The team worked very hard to swim all four disciplines the correct way so they would not get any disqualifications when we swam at the annual conference meet.”
  • Grayson wins state
     YORKTOWN –– Grayson County  captured its first ever state title in Little League fastpitch softball recently with a 7-1 win over McLean in the 10-11 division at the York County Sports Complex.   Grayson County entered the week-long event as the District 1 champion and began pool play against Northhampton on July 16. Kassie Hawks and Jenna Holdaway combined to pitch a perfect game, while Grayson hitters rolled up 13 runs with Emily Hart leading the way with a 3-for-3 game at the plate in a 13-0 victory.
  • Blue Sox repeat as state champions
     RADFORD –– The Grayson County Blue Sox 9-under baseball team won the 2010 USSSA state championship May 30. The Sox trailed Wythe County 6-0 in the second inning of their opening game before rebounding to post a 17-9 victory. Game 2 pitted Grayson County against Buena Vista, with the Blue Sox taking a 6-3 decision. After drawing a bye in the first round of Day 2, the Blue Sox faced Johnson City, Tenn., and scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to remain undefeated for the tournament, advancing to the semifinals.
