      2011 * Grayson County hung 58 first-half points on a team that would go on to win a state championship, blasting Clintwood 61-6. The game was scoreless with less than four minutes to go in the first quarter when the Blue Devils detonated for eight touchdowns by halftime. * Galax ended a 12-game losing streak to Radford, taking a 30-0 halftime lead in a 43-0 win over the Bobcats. Three Galax backs rushed for between 45 and 85 yards each as the Tide outgained Radford 306-120.  
  • Galax swim team takes second at conference meet
    The Galax Maroon Tide swim team moved up a spot from last year and claimed the runner-up position and the Carroll Wellness Center posted a best-ever fifth place showing at the annual conference meet, held earlier this summer at the Armfield Recreation Center in Pilot Mountain, N.C. The Maroon Tide closed the gap on league powerhouse Elkin, which again took the team title with 2,172 points, ahead of Galax’s 1,553, and the Tide defeated the Wet Lightning in a head-to-head meet in the regular season.
  • Chambers wins Roanoke C.C. match play title
      By LARRY CHAMBERS Staff   ROANOKE –– Brad Chambers of Galax birdied the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to beat Matt Harmon and win the featured Amateur Division crown of the 71st Roanoke Valley Match Play Championship held at Roanoke Country Club June 17-19.

    Nearly 100 participants turned out for the 18th running of the New River Trail Dr. Ed Dannelly 10K Run, sponsored Saturday by the Galax Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Lineberry named first-team all-ODAC
    EMORY –– Brandon Lineberry, a former player at Carroll County High School and a senior at Emory & Henry College, was honored as a first-team selection on the all-Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball team, ODAC officials announced Thursday in Forest. Lineberry was one of three Wasps to land on the three all-ODAC squads, joining second-team first baseman Carson Bryant and third-team shortstop Holden Watkins.

      2011 *Galax’s girls scored in less than four minutes and the Maroon Tide boys found the net within 30 seconds as Galax swept a pair of soccer matches from Fort Chiswell. Following the girls’ 3-1 win, Junior Espinosa and Leonel Vega took turns scoring for the boys, racking up three goals each in the Tide’s 7-1 win. *Ashley Willard reached on an error and later scored on Eden Durnil’s single to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning as Carroll County got past Richlands 3-2.
  • REMEMBER WHEN: April 17-22
      2011 *Grace Wilson was perfect though five innings before allowing a leadoff single in the sixth as Galax defeated Bland County 8-3 in softball. Wilson struck out nine. *Dustin Leonard went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and his two-run home run in the top of the eighth lifted Grayson County past Fort Chiswell 5-3. Jared Salts went the distance on the mound for Grayson, allowing one earned run on four hits.   2006
  • Strickland earns USA South tourney MVP for Panthers
    ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. –– Ferrum College freshman and Carroll County High School product Cheyenne Strickland was named the USA South Conference softball tournament most valuable player after leading the fifth-seeded Panthers to the tournament championship this past weekend with two wins over No. 4 Averett.
  • REMEMBER WHEN: April 10-16
     2011 *Marleigh Durham scored two goals as Galax extended its season-opening win streak to four matches with a 4-1 defeat of Rural Retreat. *Galax outshot Carroll County 22-8 and had 12 corners to the Cavaliers two but the two teams finished in a 2-2 draw in boys’ soccer. Junior Espinosa and Luis Turcios scored for Galax, goals that were countered by Carroll on scores by Matt Hawks and Cody Jones.   2006

        2011 * Held hitless with two outs in the fifth inning, Grayson County rallied for three runs, including a two-run, pinch-hit single by Nick Perkins, as the Blue Devils took a 4-0 win over Pulaski County. Jared Salts tossed a complete game for Grayson County. * Galax swept a boys-girls soccer double header at Bland. Sonia Solis scored twice in the girls’ 4-1 win, and eight different Maroon Tide boys scored in their 8-0 shutout of the Bears.
