    WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Life is a constant adrenalin rush for Holly Mason, a Grayson County, Va., native who recently was named program manager of AirCare Critical Care Transport Service at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
    Holly runs a service that includes two helicopters and four ambulances that transport critically ill or injured patients to Wake Forest Baptist, the only Level 1 Trauma Center in North Carolina’s Piedmont region.

    WHITETOP — It's highly unlikely that any of the winners of an eating contest at the annual Whitetop Mountain Ramp Festival got a kiss after their victory.
    The wild onion eating competition results in pungent breath that could peel paint.
    It's a good thing that the top prizes all come with a bottle of mouthwash, in addition to cash.
    Taking home the big bottle of Scope at this year's event on May 15 was a kilt-clad contender with a stomach of iron — defending champ Toby Shutters.

  • Cruising making a comeback in Galax

     

     

    When you turned 16, cruising Main Street in Galax became a right of passage, said Melissa Russell, who graduated from Carroll County High School in 2002.

    That's the last year the weekend tradition took place, she said.

    WOODLAWN — Hazzard County is coming to Woodlawn on May 20, with two beloved actors from "The Dukes of Hazzard" TV show — James Best (Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane) and Sonny Shroyer (Deputy Enos Strate).
    The pair will be at Greg's Core Supply Inc. at 5417 Elkhorn Road, along with the General Lee, a Hazzard patrol car and Cooter's tow truck.
    The event will be Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Actors will have autographed photos for sale and will sign personal items for a small fee.
    The Comptons & Friends will perform from 3-5 p.m.

    A resource fair to be held Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. in Felts Park, will bring all the community resources together to help in times of need, said Mike Edwards, organizer of Recovery Fest.
    Edwards said Recovery Fest is an opportunity to build the community — mind, body and spirit.
