    Rooftop Craft Shop reopens

    As sales slowed and fewer customers trickled in, Rooftop of Virginia management came close to shutting down its craft shop.
    But when a new committee took on the job of creating a business plan, the craft shop reopened last month after being closed for six months.
    Rooftop’s craft shop, which opened more than 40 years ago, will be returning to its original vision — to give people in the community the opportunity to display and sell their made-from-scratch items.

    Bridge is part of new Hillsville...

    HILLSVILLE — Two recent actions have started educators down the path of building a new walking trail at the Carroll County Schools Farm next to Hillsville Elementary School.
    The New River Highlands Resource, Conservation and Development Council, the Virginia Department of Forestry and Carroll schools’ agriculture teachers and students recently installed a small stream crossing bridge at the site that will become part of the recreational trail.

    BBQ crews heading to Galax for...

    Experience “BBQ With Altitude” this weekend at the 8th Annual Smoke on the  Mountain event in downtown Galax — Virginia’s official state barbecue championship.
    The event will run July 20-21, and the food, music and fun goes all day, from 10 a.m. to midnight.
    Galax has always been known for pleasing the ear as the world’s capitol of bluegrass and old-time music, and its natural beauty is a feast for the eyes. With Smoke on the Mountain, the city adds the smells and tastes of barbecue to its symphony for the senses.

    Jay Allen signs off at WBRF

    Long-time WBRF-98.1 FM bluegrass radio host Jay Allen said goodbye on Friday to his listeners.
    Twenty-three years ago, Allen began his career at 98.1 by filling in at the studio during the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention.
    “At the time, I was just doing odd jobs,” said Allen. “WBRF manager Zane Bennett called and asked if I could fill in during Old Fiddlers’ Convention week. After a few days, I thought that would be it.”

    Train your taste buds at BBQ...

    You can go from a casual barbecue fan to a professional judge after taking a one-day course during the Smoke On The Mountain state cook-off in July.
    The Twin County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s eighth annual state championship barbeque contest will feature the judging school on July 19. The contest runs July 20-21 in downtown Galax.

    Vaughan retires after 5 decades...

    FRIES — Joe Vaughan of Fries attended an awards assembly at Fries School last month and had a surprised look on his face when he was called to the stage to receive an award from principal Elizabeth Brown.
    Vaughan wasn’t expecting an award that day, and he probably didn’t think he would drive a school bus for Grayson County for nearly 60 years, starting in 1954.

    More than produce at Galax Farmers...

    On Friday and Saturday mornings, Galax Farmers’ Market vendors offer up fresh-baked bread, plants and flowers, herbs, locally harvested fruits and vegetables, canned and baked goods and handmade arts and crafts.
    The two-year $34,000 grant from the Agriculture Market Service funds a part-time Galax Farmers’ Market manager to help get the word out about the Galax venue to increase vendors and shoppers.

    R/C jet pilots take hobby to new...

    Area 52 members out of Max Meadows took a test flight at Twin County Airport during the Virginia Jets event on June 9.
    More than 20 pilots took advantage of the runway at the general aviation airport to launch their aircraft.
    Area 52, with some members hailing from the Twin Counties, sponsored the weekend of fun for radio control model enthusiasts who fly miniature versions of jets.

    Galax picked for state's...

    Love is set to pop up all over Virginia in many different and unexpected places as part of a new effort by the state tourism office to share the message that love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation.
    Galax is one of only 11 destinations across the state chosen by the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) to create a giant LOVE artwork to bring more family travelers to Virginia.

    Hazzard Comes to Galax — with video

     

    Thousands of fans raced to Galax on Saturday to meet the stars and cars of the TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard” in Felts Park. The event sponsored by Greg’s Core Supply, a local business.

    Several actors from the 1979-1985 show attended the second annual “Hazzard Comes to Galax" event, including  John Schneider (Bo Duke), Ben Jones (Cooter), Rick Hurst (Deputy Cletus), James Best (Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane) and Sonny Shroyer (Deputy Enos Strait).

    Hundreds of children made a mad dash for candy-filled Easter eggs at the Galax Parks & Recreation Department's annual egg hunt on March 31. In addition to sweets, some eggs had paper slips that earned the finder a prize.
