A fast break goal that would have made Roy Williams proud gave Galax a 2-0 lead nine minutes in and the Maroon Tide held off Graham 3-1 in a critical Mountain Empire District soccer match Thursday at Galax High School.

Galax upped its overall record to 11-0 with the win and is now 4-0 in district play after clearing the big hurdle provided by the G-Men.

Tide, Devils post high finishes

Galax and Grayson County earned five scoring finishes each at the Buffalo Invitational track meet Friday at Floyd County High School.

Grayson’s Tyler Pauley and the Maroon Tide’s Darian Brown placed in two events each. Pauley took home a pair of third-place finishes, in the 400 (53.60 seconds) and the 1600 (4:53.92) while Brown was third in the high jump (5-8) and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (18.06).

Graham hands Tide girls MED loss

Galax’s top doubles tandem remained undefeated on the year but Graham easily took the team win, knocking off the Maroon Tide 8-1 in a Mountain Empire District girls’ tennis match Thursday at Felts Park.

The two teams started the afternoon in doubles, and the Maroon Tide duo of Hanks and Davis bounced back from a close 7-5 loss in the first set to score a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over the G-Girls’ Caitlin Williams and Rebecca Day.

Dreams of my son

 As parents we all have dreams about our kids’ futures. We hope to pinch ourselves some day, wake up from those dreams and find that our progeny have made themselves into this or that, that they are successful, respected and on their way to doing better than we did. 

Cavaliers, Blue Devils stay hot

INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County racked up 11 runs in the first inning and clinched the Mountain Empire District regular season baseball title Wednesday with a 17-2, five-inning win over Galax at the Grayson Rec. Park.

The Blue Devils (13-5 overall, 8-1 district) won for the third time in three days this week, and won their fifth straight since suffering back-to-back one-run losses to start the month.

Callahan, Devils shut down...

INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County pitcher Chelsea Callahan wasn’t perfect all day. Just most of it.

A sophomore, Callahan allowed just two baserunners, issued zero walks and got flawless defense behind her as the Blue Devils took a 9-1 softball win Tuesday in a nondistrict game at the Grayson County Recreation Park.

Fridley, Brown top Dannelly field

One of the more popular running events among Twin County and regional athletes had a distinctly local flavor at the awards presentation Saturday.

Runners hailing from Galax filled the top three overall female finishing positions and two of the top three male spots at the New River Trail-Dr. Ed Dannelly 10K run, sponsored by the Galax Recreation Department and held on the New River Trail State Park.

Grayson County balances budget

INDEPENDENCE – Grayson County has managed to close the deficit in next year’s budget without a tax increase, dipping into its reserve account or affecting any core services.
County Administrator Jonathan Sweet said the board’s two favorite words last week when he told supervisors there was a “balanced budget.”
Though the supervisors began budget talks facing a potential $1.4 million shortfall between requested expenditures and projected revenues, the county staff able to close that gap.
