CCHS could see heating and cooling improvements

HILLSVILLE — Seeking funding for replacing the heating and air conditioning system at Carroll County High School came up at the county supervisors' meeting Monday, during a school construction update.
Taking action to replace the more than 40-year-old system arose at the end of Clerk of the Works Dennis Cole’s report, though there’s not much left to report on as Phase 3 improvements at the high and intermediate schools are down to going over the warranty items with contractors and other finishing touches.

Livestock team to represent state at national 4-H event

HILLSVILLE — The first representatives from Virginia going to nationals from the livestock quiz bowl are members of the Carroll County 4-H Club.
With their knowledge tested about pigs, sheep, goats and cattle in the state quiz bowl while facing teams from clubs in Montgomery and Augusta counties, the Carroll team came out on top, according to coaches Tammy Vass and Kay Williams.
“We are the first team in the state to go to this contest,” Vass told The Gazette. “Also, we are representing the state of Virginia.”

Virtual school took advantage of Carroll

When Virginia’s first statewide virtual school opened in 2009, it looked to be a good deal for the private operator and its host, Carroll County, but a bad deal for state taxpayers.
Now the Carroll County School Board has concluded it’s getting a raw deal, too, and voted to end its contract with the for-profit K12 Inc.

Carroll pulls plug on virtual school

HILLSVILLE — Carroll County educators have pulled the plug on the first statewide virtual school after mounting concerns.
Few local students taking advantage of the service and demands on the school system’s staff time are two factors that eventually short circuited the program known as the Virtual Academy of Virginia, according to Schools Superintendent Strader Blankenship.
“Out of that 350 students, only five were Carroll County students,” he said.

Natural gas to flow soon in Carroll

HILLSVILLE  — The new natural gas pipeline manager and utility specialist made his second appearance before the Carroll Industrial Development Authority on his first day on the job May 6.
The first occasion that Earl Hagee spoke to the IDA occurred back in the fall when he was still an employee of MasTec, the company that won the contract to install the pipeline to serve Mohawk as a job retention effort.

Concerns about class move

I am writing to express concerns about moving sixth and seventh grades from St. Paul School to Carroll County Middle School in Hillsville.
Each parent has an opportunity to select the school for their children, and as their former school board representative, I strongly urge everyone to leave their children at St. Paul for 2013‑2014.
St. Paul is one of the best schools in Carroll County, with modern facilities and a great faculty and staff.
If you desire that your children play sports, transportation can be provided for after-school activities.

First guards begin training at prison

INDEPENDENCE — The first of numerous sets of correctional officers began their three-month training Friday at the River North Correctional Center in Grayson County.
Ben Wright, warden of the soon-to-open prison, updated the Grayson Board of Supervisors on the progress of the facility as he begins building his staff of nearly 350.
“This has been a night that’s been long coming for us,” said Supervisors Chairman Mike Maynard during the board’s regular monthly meeting last week.

Taking two seconds to strap on a seat belt indisputably saves lives.
Yet researchers from a Virginia university found that more than a fifth of drivers still refuse to make that life-saving click.
Fortunately, the research can help guide law enforcement and education efforts to persuade more people to buckle up.
Researchers at Old Dominion University used a low-tech method to capture data. They stood at the side of roads throughout the state, clad in orange vests, clipboards in hand to eyeball passing drivers, making note of who was wearing a seat belt.

McGrady wins Democratic nod in 6th District race

HILLSVILLE — Jonathan Lee McGrady officially won the Democratic Party nomination this week to run for the 6th District House of Delegates seat this fall.
The Carroll County attorney and tree farmer hopes to succeed Del. Annie B. Crockett-Stark (R-Wytheville), who is retiring. He was unopposed in his bid for the nomination.
McGrady, 43, has practiced law with his father, Joe McGrady, in his hometown of Hillsville since graduating from William & Mary in 1995.
