Appalachian Power is reporting that power should be restored by tonight (Friday) to customers in Carroll, Grayson, Smyth, Washington and Wythe counties.

Dance conservatory presents 'Alice in Wonderland' ballet

Who says ballet is stuffy and boring?
Not anyone who saw The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre’s “Alice in Wonderland” ballet in Ashe County, N.C., on June 8.
This weekend, the conservatory will bring the ballet version of “Alice” to the Galax High School auditorium for performances June 14 and 15 at 6 p.m.

Fries to host 'Catch the Fun' fishing tournament

The Town of Fries will host the “Catch the Fun Festival” fishing tournament on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., sponsored by the Fires Fire Department and the Fries Recreation Center.

Pre-register at Fries Volunteer Fire Department, Fries Town Hall or the Fries Recreation Center

Prizes will be awarded by length:

• 1st — $100

• 2nd — $50

Canning named Grayson teacher of the year

INDEPENDENCE — Amy Canning, a seventh grade special education teacher at Independence Middle School, was named the Grayson County Teacher of the Year in special ceremonies held last month.
A teacher of the year was selected from each of the eight schools in Grayson County, and Canning was selected for the top honor.
Kevin Chalfant, superintendent of Grayson County schools, complimented Canning during his presentation: “She was born to be a teacher.”

Carroll gets $5M more for school work

HILLSVILLE — Additional work on Carroll County High School can proceed after the county received a $5 million loan from U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The money will cover more than just replacing the aged heating and air conditioning system.
On the eve of a meeting scheduled by the Carroll County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) to discuss funding options for the work on the high school, Supervisors Chairman David Hutchins announced that the county has learned that it will get the facilities loan from the federal agency.

Galax wins state award for clean drinking water

The Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Drinking Water has presented the City of Galax Water Treatment Plant with a 2012 Excellence in Waterworks Operations Gold Award.
This award indicates that the plant on Chestnut Creek has met goals for clarification and filtration in 2012.
Mayor C.M. Mitchell presented the award to water plant workers Mike Brown and Jerry Russell at the June 10 meeting of Galax City Council.

Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival & Guitar Competition is June 15

If a lazy day atop one of Virginia’s highest mountains listening to the region’s best music sounds appealing, then the Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition is the place for you.
It’s always on the third Saturday in June.
The festival at Grayson Highlands State Park is an annual fundraiser for youth music scholarships. More than $47,000 has been awarded to aid young, local, traditional musicians in continuing their music education.
