Assistant administrator files for protective order against supervisor

HILLSVILLE — Carroll County's assistant administrator has filed a complaint and an emergency protective order against Supervisor Bob Martin, alleging harassment — a charge that the elected official denies categorically.

Armed robbery suspects sought

Galax police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred in the city on May 17 at approximately 9:14 p.m.

According to a Galax Police Department report, Tienda Hispana La Estrella at 114 Hanes Rd. reported that two men entered the store just after 9 p.m. on Thursday. The pair allegedly demanded cash and one displayed a black semi-automatic handgun.

The pair fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. No vehicle was observed.

Grayson court unseals more indictments

INDEPENDENCE — Several more indictments have been unsealed by Grayson County Circuit Court, revealing the names of suspects indicted by a grand jury on April 28.
An indictment indicates that the grand jury found sufficient evidence for a case to go to trial, and does not indicate guilt.
All of those indicted are innocent until proven guilty.
The most recent charges unsealed include:
• David Lee Anthony, Galax – possession of a schedule II controlled substance (methamphetamine).

GHS begins track, football field upgrades

Galax City Public Schools will begin a $356,200 construction project on Tuesday, making upgrades to the high school football field.
As part of the school system’s 5-year capital project plan, the Galax School Board approved a bid of $296,200 from DCI/Shires Inc. and a $60,000 bid from DCI/Shires of Bluefield, W. Va., for upgrades to the athletic field and track at GHS.

Tax rates could rise to balance Galax budget

The City of Galax has proposed a increase to the meals tax as part of the $15.7 million budget for 2013.
Raising the meals tax rate from 5¢ to 7.5¢ would maintain services and prevent Galax teachers from taking home less money in their paychecks next school year due to a 5 percent increase in contributions to the Virginia Retirement System.
