Dreams of my son

 As parents we all have dreams about our kids’ futures. We hope to pinch ourselves some day, wake up from those dreams and find that our progeny have made themselves into this or that, that they are successful, respected and on their way to doing better than we did.

Incredibly silly
This is in response to the lady that wanted the Town of Hillsville to put an ordinance against jake brakes for truck drivers. We really don’t have many truck drivers in town unless there is a tragedy on Interstate 77. You know there are so many things in this world that we could all be worried about and that just seems incredibly silly to me. I wish all drivers — independent, company drivers — would stop just for one week. They would be begging to hear a truck driver’s jake brake. Thank you for the Hotline.

Fridley, Brown top Dannelly field

One of the more popular running events among Twin County and regional athletes had a distinctly local flavor at the awards presentation Saturday.

Runners hailing from Galax filled the top three overall female finishing positions and two of the top three male spots at the New River Trail-Dr. Ed Dannelly 10K run, sponsored by the Galax Recreation Department and held on the New River Trail State Park.

Grayson uses huge start to win...

 BASTIAN –– Grayson County opened the game with 11 runs in the top of the first inning Thursday and cruised to a 26-1 Mountain Empire District baseball win over Bland County.

Devils, Tide start busy week

As far as Monday – and only Monday – is concerned, Grayson County’s 5-2 win over Galax was of great importance, a hard-fought win by the Blue Devils over their fellow co-leader in the Mountain Empire District baseball standings.

But as far as the week as a whole is concerned, “a man’s week,” according to Grayson coach Mike Worrell, Monday’s outcome may turn out to not matter a whit to either team by Saturday evening.

Tide refocuses to go 13-0

INDEPENDENCE –– If ever a soccer team needed to burn a timeout to break the momentum of an opponent’s run, it was Galax late in the first half Thursday against Grayson County.

Of course in soccer there is no such thing as a timeout, so Maroon Tide coach Troy Barkley just left it up to his seniors.

Having seen a two-goal lead disappear in the span of four minutes, Galax regrouped and scored twice in the final three minutes of the first half and went on to a 5-2 win over the Blue Devils at Bill Strong Field.

Cavaliers blank Tazewell

HILLSVILLE –– As the only two seniors on the Carroll County softball team, Autumn Hill and Ragan Halsey anchor the Cavaliers in a figurative manner. They do so in a more literal sense as the team’s first and third basemen and its No. 3 and 4 hitters.

Situated in between the two on the diamond, and in the middle of it all Tuesday, was freshman pitcher Gracie Davidson.

The young Carroll right-hander shut down Tazewell on three hits, striking out nine and walking two as the Cavaliers claimed a 6-0 Southwest District win.

Duplicating services
I would like to know if Carroll County is in such a shortfall on the school board budget, why they are paying for two separate buses for sports to go to one location. Why are they even paying for cheerleaders to have a bus and driver to begin with? Why are we outsourcing mowing when we have janitors and the maintenance crew? Why are we sending school buses [out of town] and cars to local garages when we have approximately two to three mechanics in the bus garage?

Woodlawn School gets moving

HILLSVILLE — Carroll schools officials have advised educators and staff affected by the county’s grade reshuffling, particularly those at Woodlawn, that it’s time to get moving.
With the closing of the school steeped in history at Woodlawn, grades six and seven will join the eighth grade at what will now be called the Carroll County Middle School this fall. The ninth grade will go to Carroll County High School.
