S.C. man charged with car theft...

HILLSVILLE — A South Carolina man was arrested Feb. 21 after local authorities responded two related incidents, involving the theft of a vehicle from one residence and the breaking and entering of another home that same day.

Police said the man allegedly stole a car the owner left running in his driveway, then broke into a house and was found in the bathroom dyeing his hair.

Fire leaves Hillsville man...

HILLSVILLE — A fire in Hillsville left a resident homeless early Sunday morning.

Galax Fire Department responded at 1:59 a.m. to assist the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department at 1570 Old Galax Pike, a cinderblock house with additions built on.

According to Hillsville Unit 1 Chief Donnie Spangler, a neighbor reported the fire. The resident took refuge in his car.

“We don’t really know how it started,” said Spangler. “Everybody was out.”

INDEPENDENCE – Grayson supervisors approved an additional appropriation for funding to the county’s Comprehensive Services after recent expenditures show the initial $700,000 may not be enough.

RICHMOND — With two weeks left in Virginia’s annual legislative session, lawmakers still have hundreds of bills on table.

The House and Senate have each completed work on their respective bills and before their Feb. 28 adjournment are now considering bills passed by the other chamber.

Some prominent issues, including tightening ethics rules for elected officials and keeping intact a prohibition on Medicaid expansion, have largely been resolved. Legislators also are close to agreement on updates to the state budget.

Life-saving dispatchers honored...

It’s amazing where just doing your job can get you.

For two local police dispatchers, their life-saving efforts got them recognized in the U.S. House of Representatives.

As previously reported by The Gazette, Galax police dispatchers Tim Webb and Justin Wooten were working dispatch on Dec. 29, 2014, when an emergency call came through from the Skyland Estates section of Fancy Gap. Cheri Grable, watching her sick grandson, was on the line, desperate for help.

Galax City Council honors Eagle...

At Monday night’s meeting, Galax City Council awarded special recognition to Boy Scout Troop 188, especially five of its members who attained the rank of Eagle Scout — Jack Haga, Tate Haga (who was unable to attend), Denver Nuckolls, Graham Parks and Ian Schaeffer.

The Scouts each received a certificate of recognition from council.

Few children in Va. haven't...

A flurry of measles infections around the country— most linked to the exposure of several dozen people to the virus at Disneyland in California — has made national headlines.

But Virginia has yet to report a single case this year. One possible reason, according to public health officials: few children in the state are opting out of the school-required vaccine.

In the 2013-14 school year, 446 kindergartners in Virginia applied for a nonmedical exemption from vaccines, a low number compared with other states.

RICHMOND — A Senate committee on Tuesday killed a bill that would prevent police from seizing assets in a criminal case unless a defendant were convicted or entered a plea agreement.

The measure (HB1287) passed the House of Delegates 92-6 earlier this month and passed the Senate Courts of Justice Committee 11-2 last week.

However, the Senate Finance Committee killed it on Feb. 17, and Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment said it would be studied by the State Crime Commission.

The idea for The Studio sparked after Tom and DeeDee Wright rented a building across from Midway Shell in Woodlawn last November, to house an office for Tom’s business.
