  • Looking at the year ahead

    2012 will go out as debt-ridden, violent, political abuse of power, sock it to the taxpayer and demand for stricter gun control.
    2013 is shaping up as a repeat of the old wags. Political games, more taxes, spending control (a joke). So-called leaders in Congress call each other names, a $16.5 trillion deficit burdens this nation.
    GOP wants spending cuts, while the liberal agenda is tax and spend and don’t worry about it.
    In the middle of all this is Social Security and Medicare. Will it be there for the future?

  • Toy drive donors thanked

    We would like to thank everyone who donated to the Fries High School Website toy drive.
    Because of caring people like you, we were able to buy toys, clothing, and food for a lot of kids in need in the Fries area.
    This was made possible through the joint effort of several people, including the Fries Methodist Circuit Youth Group.
    Also, thank you to our Santas for all their work delivering the gifts, and to everyone who played a part in making the toy drive a big success!

  • Localities could win their jail gambit

    It’s about time someone turned the tables on the state.
    Lawmakers and the governor for the last few years have shifted costs onto localities while reducing state funding.
    It was almost certainly with some small amount of pleasure, then, that several New River Valley communities said enough is enough.
    Carroll and Grayson counties are among the New River Valley Regional Jail Authority’s member localities, along with the city of Radford and the counties of Pulaski, Giles, Wythe, Bland and Floyd.

  • Community donors thanked

    We would like to thank and recognize the businesses and people in our community for participating in the Mary Kay “Adopt-A-Grandparent” project.
    Each donation enabled us to provide a Christmas stocking stuffed with hygiene products for both men and woman at our local Trinity Mission nursing home in Hillsville.
    Thank you for adding a little joy to these residents at Christmas time.

    The volunteers at Asbury Thrift Shop would like to thank everyone for their support and donations during 2012.
    During the December clearance sale, we gave 580 pounds of potatoes to families in the community.
    We look forward to your continued support in 2013 as we attempt to be “the little church that strives to make a big difference in the community.”

  • Majority spoke in election

    Your letter writer (“Voters made mistake,” Dec. 17) described the re-election of President Obama as a “slap in God’s face” and the “most deadly decision in the history of the country.”
    Your writer accused the president of “treason. "Your writer, one of “God’s people [who] see the truth,” predicted that we would all die: “[there will be] no survivors.”
    After a hard-fought campaign, President Obama was reelected by a majority of Americans.
