  • Elderly, disabled can't afford high prices

    Dear President Obama:
This letter is for all the elderly and disabled people in this country.
These people are going to starve to death if something isn’t done about sky-high prices on everything.
They give us a so-called “cost of living adjustment,” then go up on Medicare, supplement insurances, food, medicine and gas. We are actually worse off than before the so-called raise.
One of the biggest things wrong is letting them take God out of everything. We turn our backs on God and he will turn away from our country.

  • Congressional spending is outrageous

Congress gives the typical taxpayer a sad, sob story about the national debt.
If the taxpayer really knew what their taxes were going to, they would be outraged.
I am going to let you in on what I think is a direct hit on the intelligence of Americans. These are true causes that Congress has spent our money on.
They have spent millions of your tax money to study why monkeys throw their feces. Another good one is the study of the mating habits of quails in China.

  • Keep SWVA Training Center open

As the parent of a daughter who has lived at Southwest Virginia Training Center for 11 years, I understand the confusion and anger expressed by other families who attended the Feb. 9 meeting with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
Decisions affecting training center residents were made without family/guardian involvement, or  on-campus investigations.

  • Carroll citizens didn't vote for change

I disagree with a recent letter that stated Carroll County voters showed a strong expression for change of incumbent supervisors.
Actually, they expressed satisfaction by matching the highest percentage of returning supervisors during the past 37 years. Let’s take a minute and look at Carroll’s political history.

  • Carroll schools need help from citizens

  • Avoiding the quagmire

Attendees at the Carroll County School Board meeting last week witnessed a display of intestinal fortitude.
That came when Pine Creek District representative Olen Gallimore made an announcement at last Thursday’s special school board meeting on construction matters.
Gallimore’s behavior has been questioned after he received loads of fill dirt on his property from the Carroll Intermediate School construction site.

  • Consequences of failed leadership

With the exception of President Clinton’s first term and President Obama’s first two years, Republicans have been in control of our government for the past 30 years.
This reign began under President Reagan and his mantra was “government is the problem.”
The Republican leadership has said shrink government, reduce taxes and get rid of regulations and our problems will be solved. Unfortunately, the problems are multiplying and deepening.

  • Odell Hamden remembered

My memories of Odell Hamden are wonderful and plentiful, knowing him as long as I can remember.
He was one of those people who, if you knew him, you grew up looking up to and it only grew stronger as you got older.
Growing up in Galax Presbyterian Church, I always remember him being in the choir and always someone you knew would be there if there was any type of need. He would always say, "You're looking good today!"
