Today's Opinions

  • Laurel is a first-class school

There are approximately 275 students enrolled in Laurel Elementary School. The students and staff are amazing.
After learning about the number of books these students have read in the Accelerated Reading Program, I felt that they should all be recognized for their hard work.
It is hard to believe that with the number of students at Laurel Elementary, they have read and passed tests for 17,353 books.

  • Respect process of Bottle House sale

Regarding the April 30 meeting of the Hillsville Town Council, Jody Early was well aware that neither he nor any other citizen has a right to address council on a matter that has not been placed on the council agenda per recommendation of the executive committee of council.
He was speaking out of order and should not normally have been given the time to speak on a matter not yet even agreed to by the committee.
Procedural rules are there for a purpose and not to be used as some self-interest would dictate.

  • A Message to the Class of 2012

  • Coach looks back on career

As I reflect on my 31 years of coaching girls’ sports at Galax High School, I felt like I needed to take the time to publicly thank several groups that helped make my coaching career both successful and enjoyable.
I know it is impossible to thank everyone, so if I leave anyone out, I apologize.
First I would like to thank all of the school board members, superintendents, principals, assistant principals, athletic directors, and city council members.

  • Voice opinions about 'Bottle House'

To all citizens of The Town of Hillsville:
I am writing this letter for you to call or write your council member or mayor, expressing your opinion about the possible purchase of the “Bottle House” property.
They don’t know unless you express your opinion.
