  • One night before Christmas...

    Editor’s note: Andy Johnson, age 8, of Galax wrote us this letter, his retelling of “Twas The Night Before Christmas.”
    One night before Christmas, they was all snug in their beds as candy canes danced in their heads.
    The children were dreaming about Santa and his elfs in his sleigh, riding all around the world as they was delivering presents to every good girl and boy.
    But, they heard a noise. It sounded like reindeer prancing on the rooftop.

  • Mental health funding still an issue in Virginia

    The legislative subcommittee examining Virginia’s mental health system registered a significant victory earlier this year when the General Assembly approved a bill expanding the mandated services provided by community services boards.

    It also has done well to address the systematic shortcomings illuminated by the 2015 death of a mentally ill inmate. As a result, jailhouse deaths will now be investigated by the Board of Corrections.

  • The best resource to combat ‘fake news’

    You hardly know who to believe these days, when actual events can be very strange and comedians can imitate politicians so well you have to ask, “It that him, or someone pretending to be him?”

  • 9th District needs better representation

    As I drive by the Crossroads Institute, with a parking lot full of cars or when I visit the Blue Ridge Music Center, which draws thousands of tourists from all over the world, I remember fondly the efforts of our former representative, Rick Boucher, and all he did for our 9th District during his 29 years of service.

  • Lessening the penalty for first-time pot possession

    Virginia might take a step soon to lessen the penalties for first-time marijuana possession — ending the current criminal prosecution that does more harm than good.

    A bill that would make first-time marijuana possession a civil offense, rather than a criminal charge, will be considered in the next session of the Virginia General Assembly, which begins in January.

    The bill probably will receive a full hearing because of its sponsor — Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment, a James City County Republican.

  • Have compassion for mother charged in child’s death

    This is concerning my granddaughter and the death of my grandson.
    She has been going through the legal system since this happened almost eight months ago. I think it’s time to give her and her family some time to grieve and heal the best they can.
    People involved in this legal system are trying to make an example out of her... because of a video that a certain person has pushed to get her convicted.
    I think all involved in this should be ashamed. She doesn’t need to be hated and locked up, she needs freedom and compassion.
