  • CDC report raises concerns for reader

From “The Washington Post” July 14, 2014: A report from the Centers for Disease Control states “The nation’s percentage of gays, lesbians and bisexuals is less than supposed.”
Their figures are: less than 3 percent of respondents to the survey self-identified themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual, only 1.6 percent as gay or lesbian and less than .07 percent as bisexual; 96.6 percent identified themselves as straight; while 61 percent responded “I don’t know the answer” or something else.

  • Immorality, corruption will lead to downfall

I was listening to the news this morning and there was severe weather for 30 million Americans.
The West is burning. Tornadoes in the Midwest and South. Flooding, Ebola and of course more earthquakes.
Did you know that five things God brought upon Israel when they turned against him you’ve just read?
We’re going down and it is because of immorality and corrupt government. The fall of all previous empires was immorality and corrupt government.

  • Meat consumption worse health hazard than Ebola

U.S., state, and municipal health authorities are working overtime and spending millions of dollars to stem the spread of Ebola, which has killed just one person here.
Where is the comparable effort to stem the spread of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases that kill 1.4 million Americans annually and are linked conclusively to excessive consumption of animal products?

  • Adding to life sentence a waste of tax money

After reading your front page article on Sept. 10 about an inmate serving a life sentence, indicted on a cell phone charge, I have to ask why is my county judicial system wasting my money indicting a man already serving a life sentence?
Just imagine if he needs a court-appointed lawyer. Then he wants a jury trial. Then the case is dragged out for more than a year — continuances, motions, etc.

  • Imagine a world free of illegal immigrants

Imagine if our children and grandchildren could have had a country and community to grow and live as we did.
Imagine if only we had cared enough to have stopped Mexico’s invasion and drugs and occupation.
Imagine if only our children could have had their American hopes and dreams instead of Mexican illegals.

  • Hillsville is sitting on a gold mine

If you ask me, Hillsville is sitting on a gold mine.
I visited the old courthouse where the Allen Tragedy was played out over 100 years ago, and the Hale Wilkinson Carter Home which is steeped in history but badly in need of repairs and renovations.
This is a wonderful little town in a great location right off a major highway. But to outsiders it has a reputation of nothing to offer but a flea market and thriving drug trade.

  • Carroll should invest in grant writer

When the Carroll County Board of Supervisors agreed to seek out a grant writer to help fund a water park or a pool for the county earlier this month, we can’t help but wonder what went through the former county grant writer’s mind.

And, we wonder how much more funding the county could have landed for a pool and other projects had they kept Brenda Marrah — who became Galax’s very successful grants administrator after Carroll terminated her position.
