During my working years I was fortunate to earn enough that I could occasionally invest small amounts toward retirement income.
Over time, the interest on these investments accrued to an amount that I was able to live comfortably in my retirement.
However, during these last three years this retirement income has decreased significantly, causing me to wonder what the actual percentage of this income loss would be?

It’s time we “hard-working Americans” take a stand.
Those of us who must work three jobs to pay our soaring electric bills, etc., do not usually have the time to write a letter in response to other published opinions.
Even though I run two small businesses, work a public job, and raise three small children, I chose to lose a few precious hours of sleep to voice my concerns with the upcoming elections.
We are all struggling to keep a positive outlook for our children and live the American Dream.

Our “new” Republican leaders have lost their moral bearings.
They are spreading lies about President Obama’s personal history and his accomplishments, have refused to compromise, blocked every jobs bill, and now are trying to suppress votes.
Americans have died in the struggle to expand our voting rights. Recently our Republican legislatures across America passed new laws that would make voting more difficult for seniors, minorities, the poor, young, and first-time voters, all of whom are Democratic-leaning voters.

The Gazette’s Sept. 3 “Vote Smart” editorial rightly invokes the important obligation for every voter to be objectively informed before going to the polls.
Unfortunately, two (not so subtle, but hopefully unintentional) examples of the very bias the editorial would have us avoid are the out of context quotes, widely used in anti‑Obama rhetoric, that were included in the second paragraph of the piece.
The fact that those quotes came from speeches made in Virginia is incidental to the nominal theme of the editorial.
