• Fire department thanks community for donations

The Independence Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank all of those who helped out with the “Big Moes” barbecue sale. Five-hundred pounds of pork barbecue was sold in seven hours during the event at the Independence Town Park. The cooking process started in the wee hours of the night to ensure a great product.

  • Police doing great job in Twin Counties

I have lived in Galax since 1995, and have driven in Galax almost every day.
I have great respect for the law enforcement. I never had a ticket from either Galax or Carroll County or Grayson County.
I think all the above are doing a great job.

  • Show unity on Friday in support of local police

To participate in the “Still United 2015” movement, meet at noon on Sept. 11 at your local police station to support the officers who protect your community.
“It is time for the silent majority in this country to respect law enforcement,” said Harris County (Texas) District Attorney Devon Anderson. “There are a few bad apples in every profession. That does not mean that there should be open warfare declared on law enforcement…

  • Welcome to America, please ignore the bigots

I was horrified and saddened by the letter by Bud Cox blaming “Mexicans and these politicians” for failures and problems in our schools.
The only good thing I can say to you, Mr. Cox, is that you had the courage to sign your name.
You seem to think that all Latinos come from Mexico, which is certainly not the case. And although you blame people from only one country, I can’t help but think you are lumping everyone into the same bucket.
Do you have an atlas? Look at all the other countries south of the border.

  • Writer supports Bernie Sanders for president

We encourage the citizens of Southwest Virginia to support Bernie Sanders for president. For the first time in years, we have the chance to vote for a candidate whose track record shows he will represent the ordinary citizens and working people of this country instead of big money and corporate interests.
Bernie wants to do the following for us:
    • Invest $1 trillion over five years to modernize our infrastructure, creating at least 13 million good-paying jobs

  • Confederate flag is not about heritage

Those who defend display of the Confederate flag (more correctly, the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia), either are ignorant of current events or history or perhaps both.
There were any number of battle flags adopted by generals of the Confederacy. This particular flag never represented the Confederacy as a whole.
At the end of the war, in 1865, Lee asked his followers to furl this flag; he said “Stow it away. Put it in your attics.”

  • Patient says he owes life to doctor, clinic

I have a great story to tell about Oldtown Medical Clinic of Galax and nurse practitioner Laurie H. Jones, who actually saved my life.
I am disabled and got sick and went to see her. Just by telling her how I felt, she ordered specific lab work for me, then called me the following morning and told me she had called the emergency room doctor who was waiting for me.
She knew I had blood clots but didn’t want to alarm me. When I got to the hospital it was confirmed that I have multiple blood clots in my lungs as well as my leg.

  • A good word for a local nursing home

Recently, I had the misfortune of falling and breaking my hip, but the fortune of being sent to Waddell Nursing and Rehab.

I got the utmost care and the entire staff was not only professional, but kind and patient in all they do, above and beyond the call of duty.

My only complaint was they almost fed me to death. Who eats three hot meals a day? I sure couldn’t.

Thank you to everyone who so lovingly took care of me. And special thanks to the great physical therapy team.

  • Many questions about terrorism weren't asked

Many things have happened, both good and bad.
There are questions that should have been asked and answered years ago.
It is recalled there was much merriment when some foreign-born students at a flight school only wanted to know how to control the aircraft once airborne. No instruction on takeoffs, landings or other fine arts of flying was needed.
Did this not create the slightest curiosity on anyone’s part? Was this not reported to the FAA or the FBI? Surely it was and a follow-up warranted.

  • Government shouldn't legalize foreign criminals

Legalization of these illegal Mexican criminals, the last defiance against the American people.
It will happen and it will be the final nail for society and any future for the American people.
No one has any idea how many Mexicans have already criminally entered our country, but there is no doubt that the numbers are now reaching 100 million.
With millions of Mexican anchor babies at your expense, with them taking over our schools, the American children are being cheated of their legal and rightful education as real American citizens in their own country.
