    He ran on a campaign of negotiating with world heads and not being a bully like Bush was accused of being. He ran as a “unifier” rather than a “divider” like Bush was accused of being.

    I don't believe in calling the Readers’ Hotline, so I am writing to voice my opinion about some of the uninformed Hotline callers.

    I would like to comment on a March 8 blurb, titled "Money Doesn't Teach."  Since the caller doesn't seem to take much stock in education, I want to grade his/her work.

    Award recognizes excellence

     

    Congratulations to the Galax City Public School System for receiving the 2010 Virginia Board of Education Competence to Excellence Award!

    This is a significant accomplishment that our school system has received, recognizing two consecutive years of achieving state and federal benchmarks in education.

    Having served on the Galax City School Board for two terms, I have seen firsthand the hard work and dedication that the administration and faculty bring to work every day.

    Billing came before care at hospital

     

    I'll begin by saying that my concerns in no way reflect the “'hands on” care that I received while a patient in the emergency room at Twin County Regional Hospital. The health care staff was professional and I received excellent care.

    Recently, I sustained a deep cut to my finger. Knowing that I would need stitches, I went to Twin County’s emergency room.

    It's not possible to express the anger and disgust I felt after I read about the rout of the state legislature by APCo.

    You'd think our state politicians would have learned a lesson after watching their big brothers in Washington stumble through the "business as usual" backroom deals with Obama's national health insurance debacle.

    Retirement facility needed

     

    A Feb. 3 Readers’ Hotline comment regarding the need for a retirement facility in Galax prompts me to update the public on activity by the city to pursue such a facility.

    One of my campaign promises when I ran for City Council in 2008 was to explore opportunities for a senior retirement facility to locate in Galax.

    We have actual herds roaming all around Pipers Gap, Cockerham Loop and Coleman Lane and on the side streets, also.

    New school is a waste of money

     

    Why are we building this expensive new Grayson Highlands school up toward Troutdale, when our school-age enrollment is declining and state funding is decreased?

    This sounds nuts to me.

    The building at Bridle Creek Elementary, where I vote, is solid as a rock.

    The academic program has won a presidential citation for excellence. It's small enough that teachers know the children and families by name.

    Get ready for painful budget cuts

     

    I must be psychic. My last letter pointed out that there would be many state and local cuts coming because of Medicaid funding changes, when and if this healthcare plan passes.

    Lo and behold, cuts are taking place well ahead of time, much like credit card companies scrambled to increase interest rates well ahead of the February deadline that they were given by the feds.

    If you look at the cuts reported in The Gazette Dec. 21, it is amazing but pretty predictable.
