Tax hike poorly timed

Wait one minute, the Grayson County Board of Supervisors is considering a jump in our real estate taxes to help them balance our county budget.

Is this the same group that voted to remodel and build two area schools, one of which cannot be opened because someone did not do their homework?

The Gazette reported that the county began in 2008 borrowing money to pay day-to-day expenses. Now our supervisors want a $4 million line of credit, and wanted to renegotiate the school construction loan.

Show could not go on

I wish to address the concerns expressed by a Grayson County High School Chorus parent regarding this year’s spring musical cancellation.

It was a disheartening but appropriate decision based upon rational consideration.

While Grayson County Schools have missed comparable amounts of snow days in the past, this year differs greatly due to three consecutive weeks of school being missed directly preceding the production. Attempts to hold rehearsal on cancelled days resulted in inadequate attendance.

Galax recognizes firefighters

This letter was addressed to the Galax Volunteer Fire Department and Chief David Hankley.

Galax City Council asked me to convey their thanks and gratitude for the valiant efforts out forth by the Galax Volunteer Fire Department at the fire on South Main Street on March 19.

It was through their work that damage from this fire was essentially limited to a single structure.

Immigrants threaten democracy

There is no need for anyone to see the Mexican border to be concerned about illegal immigration.

It is enough to see that the Mexican consulate feels the need to set up office from time to time in Southwest Virginia, that there is any crime committed by illegals who simply return after deportation, and that our police have to concern themselves with Mexican gangs recruiting in our schools.
