    More churches should help shelter
    It’s very interesting to read the editorials and also the Hotline.
    So many people seem to be annoyed by something or someone they have no control of. Oh, ye of little faith.
    Let me tell you about a woman I know. She is the wife of a minister of one of the churches in Galax.
    About a year ago she took over as director of the Hostel House of the Good Shepherd, now known as Hope House. She had no money, but prayer and faith kept her going. And she has been blessed so much.

    Club recognized for river cleanup
    A river guide book published a few years ago references the Oldtown section of the New River as a nice family type float trip, except one area that resembles a tire graveyard.
    Thanks to organizational efforts of the New River Wildlife Club and Riverside Outfitters, this book needs a new edition, as this problem is now minimal.

    Hold BP responsible for oil disaster
    Here we go again with another sad and disgusting scene in the Gulf states, where peoples lives are turned upside down by a disaster not by Mother Nature but by man — the BP oil company.
    According to reports, pressure and greed to complete building the oil rig was far more important than safety to the workers.
    Eleven lives were lost during the fiery explosion. BP had a cozy relations with government agencies and some members of Congress — what a surprise.

    I’m a rising senior at Carroll County High School. I’m 17 years old.
    In my educational life, I have come to the realization that no one in the school system teaches you about real life.
    You are taught to the Standards of Learning in every class. Then every once in a while you will have a teacher to tell you “This is something that you will use every day after you graduate.” Will you really?

    The Fourth of July, a day of freedom of Independence.
    Yes, we have freedom.
    Freedom to kill unborn babies, freedom for men to marry men and women to marry women.
    Freedom to turn our churches into a place to watch a movie, have a fashion show or buy and sell, when Christ said my house shall be called by all nations a house of prayer.
    Freedom to see ungodliness everywhere you go.
    The just will suffer, as well as the unjust.
    You say, God bless America?
    God have mercy on America.

  • Keep 'holiday spirit' all year 'round

    July 2nd was the halfway point of 2010.
    It's hard to believe that 6 months have passed since Christmas... and speaking of the holidays, we see an influx of family members and church groups and volunteers in the month of December at our local nursing home. It seems like the holidays just bring out a generous Christian spirit in people.
    Well, as activity director at Grayson Nursing, I would like to challenge those in the community to reach out to our residents at this time of year also.

  • Choose responsible leaders

    I hope the citizens of Grayson County can see now that through the years our elected supervisors have not had the best interests of the people in their hearts.
    We've known for many years that our taxes needed to be increased, but our supervisors chose not to do the right thing, which would have been to increase the tax rate a few pennies here and a few pennies there, as recommended by our county treasurer.
    But did anybody listen? No.

    Class, not faith, a factor
    Until the hollering died down, the June 10 zoning hearing in Grayson County felt kind of like a witch hunt.
    But having thought it over, I’m starting to wonder if it might be more of a class war.
    A Loudoun County resident, Laura George, had requested a special use permit (rural commercial) west of Independence on Battlefield Road by the New River. She proposed five cabins, each holding two people, and a school building to house classes taught by her Oracle Institute staff.

    Saving shelter animals
    Upon visiting the regional animal shelter in Galax last week, I learned that there is a great need for help to those who sit on death row. Animals, in particular.
    A mere $15 would save a life, no matter which one — an adorable kitten who sits among others with that look of "knowing I'm going to die unless you help me" in their eye, or a dog with that "same look."
    Why are we not going to the pound? Does it bother us to look into their faces and see the hopelessness?

    Lethal dose of incumbents
    Regarding the guest editorial, "Rising above politics," by Mayor Mitchell, is it not a dichotomy to be a politician and then declare that you are rising above politics?
    Ray Charles, if he were alive, could see through that rhetoric.
    Readers might come by the notion that you are making a political statement for Boucher's re-election.
    Concerning the health bill vote, Boucher did not break ranks with the Democratic Party on his own accord.
