  • Don't allow tax cuts to expire

    Thank you for attempting to educate citizens [with an editor’s note] about taxation in regards to "How Greedy," the Hotline caller's reference to the "Bush tax cuts."
    For those that choose to be informed, if the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 are allowed to expire, all taxpayers will pay more.
    For example, those earning $50,000 will pay nearly $3,000 more in federal taxes per year; if the income is $100,000 per year, the increased tax burden rises by more than $4,500.

  • DJ will be missed at WBRF-FM

    I am writing to you from Lincolnshire in the United Kingdom. I rarely write to newspapers and have never written to one in America. However because I feel this matter is so important I am writing to The Gazette.
    Until a few months ago I had never heard of Galax. I didn't realize that Galax was also a “hub” to the world, a '”portal” over the airwaves that had listeners worldwide.
    I discovered “the most unique ride on radio” in the form of The Nightrider (Bruce Hodges) on your station WBRF.

  • Why not a pageant for inner beauty?

    It’s me again. This time I want to talk about beauty pageants.
    At the Miss Carroll County Fair pageant, I met a girl with the purest soul.  She didn’t even place. I can say for a fact that she wanted it more than anyone there.
    The judges don’t see the inward beauty, the purity of a soul, the intelligence, and the honor that’s there. The fact that she puts everyone before her.
    All the judges saw was a nervous girl with highlighted hair, and a lavender dress.

  • Lives lost to stress, worry

    I dedicate this letter to the families who have lost a loved one due to the taking of one’s life because of illness, pressure to pay the bills, trying to keep up in a fast-paced society, bullying at school and lacking a kind and understanding heart to talk to.
    There is an alarming rise in lives lost of one taking his or her life. This made even worse during those very difficult times many face every day.
    This affects all sectors of our nation. When it hits home, it is harder to cope.

  • Hospital treatment praised

    I am an 87-year-old man and I have been in and out of hospitals all my life.
    Last week I was in Twin County Regional Hospital and I have never had any better care or treatment in my life.
    The doctors, nurses and entire staff were the best I have ever seen.
    I want to say thank you and God bless each one of you.

  • Christian 'control' of America unmandated

    In an Aug. 9-10 letter, writer Jeannette Watt laments the loss of Christian “control” of America.
    She fails to mention, however, just where it is mandated that Christians “control” America (nowhere), or just what rights Christians are losing.
    Longing for peace is certainly admirable, but not in the same breath as Christian “control.”
    Witness the Crusades, the Inquisition and the wholesale slaughter of entire populations.

  • Thank God for police officers

    I write this letter in support of law enforcement.
    We usually take law enforcement for granted, (until we need them). But we should thank God that we live in a land that is ruled by law and order.
    I know that being in law enforcement does not make you a saint. And I know that some in law enforcement should themselves be locked up.
    But if we didn't have the law, we would live in a land of utter chaos. And good people would be imprisoned in their own land and ruled by murderous thugs.

  • Obama citizenship 'article' is a hoax

    From recent e-mails, I learned “Obama’s Citizenship Case reaches the Supreme Court.”
    Obama (with the surname Soetoro) was awarded a Fulbright fellowship for foreign students.
    Must be a student with foreign citizenship.
    I believe he was born in Kenya and not eligible to be president.
    U.S. Justice Foundation has released the results of Obama’s campaign spending.
    They estimate Obama has spent approximately $950,000 in campaign funds with 11 law firms for legal resources to block disclosure of any of his personal records.

  • Treasurer not to blame

    I want to comment on my lawsuit in Grayson County Circuit Court against county officials involved in assessment and collection of the solid waste collection fee.
    The treasurer of Grayson County, one of the defendants named, has received considerable criticism. This is because his office mailed draft civil warrants to hundreds of Grayson citizens who have not paid their trash fees.
    Many objected to receiving warrants because they had not received a bill for the trash fee, and thus did not know it was unpaid.
