  • 'Everyday Math' is not for everybody

     I would like to comment about the “Everyday Math” program being used by the Carroll County school system. I am disappointed with results I am seeing. Its technique of introducing a method, then moving on without mastering it and reintroducing it later seems ineffective. The kids who are good at math get it the first time but the other kids are lost.

  • Voters need to take stand

     Well, Grayson County has done it to you once again. A 44 percent tax increase has taken effect.

    I have 23 acres with a house and saw my taxes increase from $530+ per year to $820, even though my “new” assessment dropped due to the housing issues.

    This is the equivalent of one month’s yearly income for me. My neighbor, who has twice as many acres, will have to sacrifice two month’s yearly income in order to pay this bill.

  • Reward offered for stolen statue

    We had our “little boy fishing” statue stolen from our bridge on Airport Road in Hillsville.

    We’re offering a reward for the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who stole it. If the person who stole it would like to bring it back and set it back on the bridge, that would save you from going to jail.

  • An economics lesson

     I worked many years in private business offices. Here’s a simple economics lesson.

    Pretend I own a factory that makes widgets. I sell these widgets wholesale to stores for $5 each.

    Now, out of that $5, it costs me $1 for materials to make each widget. That leaves $4.

    Out of that $4, it costs me $3 to pay my employees to make the widget (including my matching of their contribution to Social Security, known as FICA).

    That makes $4 total expenses so far to make the widget, leaving me with $1.

  • NightRide radio show is missed

     I am writing this letter as an extended member of the NightRide family.

    My family and I reside in western Massachusetts and used to listen to Bruce Hodges and the NightRide show on the Internet.

    Having met Bruce a couple of times while visiting family in the area, it pained us to hear he no longer broadcasts on Galax’s WBRF radio.

    And it made us wonder what management was thinking when they chose to change things at the station and had no room for Bruce and his show.

     The local food movement is about to become crippled by a bill that is before Congress.

  • Board members keep rec center going

     I am writing in response to the Sept. 29 Readers’ Hotline entry “No Fair.”

    I feel that this caller did not do their “homework” on the subject discussed.

    For example, board members do not get paid and volunteer all time to the Fries Rec Center. Countless hours have been spent to get the pool and athletic field ready.

    Board members and their families work the concession stands and help organize rec center activities.

  • 4th graders need help with project

     The fourth grade at Aviston Elementary School in southern Illinois is learning about the United States and the different environments, climates, resources and highlights found in each region.

    The kids in the class think it would be fun to receive postcards, souvenirs, resources, or any information about our great country from each of the 50 states.

    We hope that people who read this letter will be interested in mailing our class items pertaining to their state.

  • Citizens need to get involved

     I recently attended a Spending Revolt rally on the lawn of the Hillsville courthouse, a perfect site for such a rally.

    The historic courthouse, Main Street Hillsville, small business owners, citizens gathering, simple symbols of America’s promise of a free and just society, an opportunistic society.

    Sadly the promises and the opportunities that go along with America’s promise are being eroded by an ever‑intrusive government mounting ever‑increasing debt on the people.

  • Take back nation from 'liberal elite'

     Rep. Rick Boucher voted for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House and told us that Barrack Obama would be “the most Southwest Virginia-friendly president in American history.” Boucher voted for the Pelosi/Obama agenda 96.4 percent of the time, including for cap and trade legislation.

    Boucher is endorsed by National Abortion Rights Action League and has a 100 percent approval rating from Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union.
