  • Carroll candidate thanks supporters

I would like to personally thank everyone who supported me in my campaign for the Pipers Gap seat on the Carroll County Board of Supervisors, as well as [the incumbent] Dr. Littrell for a clean race.
Even though I lost by percentage, I did not lose by the number of votes I received, the relationships I established and the tremendous experience I gained from running for office.
Regardless of whether the candidates we supported won, we all need to hold responsible the decisions the upcoming boards will make in their attempts to move our county forward.

  • Public notices should be public

  • Lamb's Table feeds the needy

Kristy Pollard’s letter to the editor concerning "Lamb's Table" touched my heart and I would like to thank her for the kind words.
I would also like to expound on them. "Lamb’s Table" is more than one year old and has served more than 5,000 meals since its inception.
We offer a meal every Tuesday from 5 to 6 p.m. and everyone is invited to share a meal with us.
Meals are also delivered to those in the community who cannot come to the fellowship hall of Independence First United Methodist Church.

  • Delegate-elect thanks voters

I would like to thank the residents of the Fifth House District for the opportunity to serve as your Delegate in the Virginia General Assembly.
I am honored, humbled and excited by the opportunity.
I firmly believe Southwest Virginia’s best days are still ahead, and I am committed to doing everything I can to make that a reality.
While I do not have all the answers or any quick fixes, I promise to work hard every day for you.

  • Social Security myths set straight

Over the past few months, I have heard so much misinformation about Social Security that I feel compelled to set the record straight.
I have worked at the Social Security office in Wytheville for more than four years and have been a Social Security employee for almost seven years.
During that time, I have learned a great deal about how the program works. So here are some facts for your readers to consider:

  • Veterans Day program commended

This letter is to commend all concerned with the outstanding program that was presented on Veterans Day at Carroll County Intermediate School in Hillsville.
This ceremony was definitely over the top with patriotism, love of God and love of country.
From the performance of Junior ROTC members, the chorus, the band, the speeches by Gracie and Kymbre, who had won the patriotic essay contest, keynote speaker Lt. Col. Byron Penland (commander of the Radford Arsenal), Mr. Thompson, the CCIS principal, and the student body, perfection prevailed.

  • Lambs Table program is a blessing

I want to thank First United Methodist Church in Independence for the free Lambs Table dinner it gives every Tuesday.
You can give if you can, but you are not expected to.
My son is disabled and had been isolated in his home for quite some time. This church opened up to him and he now lives for the Tuesday dinner.
They come and get him and take him to the church and then back home when it is over.

  • A Thanksgiving Psalm

I would like to share with you a favorite Psalm of Thanksgiving, Psalm 103:1-5.
“Praise the Lord, O my Lord; All my inmost being praising His Holy name; Praise the Lord O my soul and forget his benefits who forgives all our sins and heals all our desires, who redeems your life from the pits and crowns us with love and compassion, who satisfies our desires with good things so that our youth is renewed to life, like the eagles.”
The theme of this Psalm is God’s great love for us.

  • Shop local this holiday season

  • A Veterans Day to remember in Hillsville

We have just enjoyed our best Veterans Day weekend, and certainly one of the best parades ever.
To all the Hillsville parade participants on Nov. 12, I extend a very warm and hearty thank you!
For fear of forgetting somebody, I will not try to list all of you, but to the marchers, riders, Carroll County High School band, Junior ROTC, reigning VFW queens, scouts, classic cars, individuals, military units, fire departments, and especially our veterans and Ladies Auxiliary, you helped to make this a special time for us.
