  • Say 'no' to nonsense grants

    The Carroll County Board of Supervisors and the county administrator need to spend more time listening to public opinion and less time trying to manipulate it.
    We were told that the sewer was going to Galax because that would be cheaper than Hillsville.
    But what they didn’t disclose was that an engineering study showed that although the price charged by Galax was less, higher infrastructure expenses would increase the cost so that going to Galax is both more expensive and more vulnerable to breakdowns (some of which have already occurred).

  • Galax firefighters saved house

    We thank the Galax Fire Department for saving our house when it was struck by lighting on June 10.
    It’s a wonderful feeling when they pull up in front of your house. There is such a feeling help has arrived.
    We are so grateful to all the members of a great fire department.

  • Donors came through for Red Cross

    Mother Nature was not on her best behavior during our recent Trail Ride for the Red Cross.
    It had started out as a lovely Sunday fundraiser for the Wood’s River Chapter (which serves Carroll, Grayson, and Wythe counties and Galax).
    However, fair skies suddenly turned to dangerously stormy conditions, and we were forced to recall our horses and riders from the trails due to safety concerns.
    Happily, everyone — riders, horses, and volunteers — found safe shelter. However, the event had to be cancelled.

  • Volunteers made 'Fun Day' possible

    On behalf of the Effective School-wide Discipline team of Independence Elementary School, I express appreciation to each person who helped make Fun Day an enjoyable event for our students.
    I extend a special thank you to Mike Wagoner who worked tirelessly and went beyond his duties to make Fun Day a success.
    The financial support of the Independence Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization enabled us to provide students with some special activities that would not have been possible without their generosity.

  • Ode to the Carico Bridge

    Ruby Johnson of Galax submitted this poem about the old Carico Bridge, over the New River on Virginia 94 in Grayson County. The metal truss bridge, built in 1927, was closed last year due to safety concerns and replaced with a new bridge that opened June 15.
    "It has always been there since I was a child, and before," Johnson said. "It is one of two that I know of in Western Virginia. The other one is over at Ravens Cliff, off the Carsonville Road," also in Grayson County.

  • Authors event a success

    On behalf of Chapters Bookshop and “Authors on Grayson Street,” we thank everyone that had a part in making the “Authors on Grayson Street” a huge success.
    Some 40 authors and publishers were under the big tent on Grayson Street on Friday and Saturday of the Leaf & String Festival held June 10-11.
    Many sponsors provided food and other items for the “Breakfast With The Authors” and the “Authors’ Hospitality Area.”

  • Area is blessed with musical talent

    What’s this I hear? There’s mountain music in them thar hills.
    I dedicate this letter in memory of the following who kept up the heritage of bluegrass and old-time music through their talent and personality — Houston Caldwell, Alan Martin, Barbara Poole and Greg Hooven.
    Time passes and things change but not the music we are accustomed to hearing since way back in the horse and buggy days.

  • Sportsmanship in the face of adversity

    On June 14 at Felts Park in Galax, I witnessed the most poorly officiated game of baseball in the history of the game itself.
    The Carroll County Indians were given every bad call imaginable. The umpires refused to be questioned and threatened to eject the team’s coaches from the game.
    Parents became upset with the treatment of their children and decided to take them home so that they couldn’t be cheated.
    The teams refused to leave, stating: “We came to play!”

  • Foundation apologizes for sudden cancellation

    The Historic 1908 Courthouse Foundation apologizes for any inconvenience due to the sudden cancellation of the Civil War encampment re-enactment scheduled for June 10-13.
    Circumstances were beyond the control of the foundation and the short time did not allow us to contact the local papers in time to post the cancellation.
    The foundation thanks the 63rd/54th Virginia Infantry Descendants Association for their efforts to pull an encampment together. We also thank The Gazette and The Declaration newspapers for their support of the event.

  • Fees should be waived

    I was saddened and felt great empathy for Emily Booth and her daughter written about in this past Friday’s Galax Gazette, upon learning the daughter had been denied her diploma on graduation day [due to a school policy regarding unpaid fees].
    Therefore, I decided to do a little research and here is what I found: Whomever levies a fee at school must also supply the parent with a clearly stated fee waiver that the parent can apply for.
