  • A message to politicians

This is for politicians. You are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.
Have you ever wondered why, if both Democrats and Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits?
Have you ever wondered why, if you all are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes?
You don’t propose a federal budget. The president does. I don’t write the tax code. Congress does. I don’t set the fiscal policy. Congress does.

  • Obama no ally of Israel

There is a saying, “There is none so blind as those who will not see.”
These words are just what America has become.
President Obama has sent millions of taxpayer dollars to the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt.
He has now sent them 20 American fighter jets.
I wonder why he wants to build up Muslim countries. It is not hard to figure out. They hate Israel and will attack it sooner or later.
    But isn’t Israel our ally?

  • Opposed to wind power

The writer made these remarks to the Carroll Board of Supervisors Jan. 14.

The supervisors promised Carroll County residents a resolution concerning not allowing windmills in Carroll County.
Last meeting, it was decided to table this matter. Rodger Jennings and I furnished information regarding our concerns with the windmills. I oppose construction of windmills anywhere in Carroll County.

  • The high ground of morality

My wife and I and another couple had a 10-year ritual of a Friday evening meal at a local eating establishment. We got to be good friends with the owners.
I fondly recall those rendezvous, especially after losing my wife to extended illness this past spring.
Another couple asked me to accompany them to this diner last week. One of the owners came over to greet us and informed me that Walter Bell died the previous week.

  • Y's Men thank community

The Community Christmas Chest had a successful 2012 by furnishing 550 area families a food baskets in time for Christmas.
The club, sponsors of the chest for the past 30 years, acknowledge and thank all those who helped make this project possible.
Gene Cox, general chairman, organized the many necessary jobs in a masterful manner.
The scope of this annual event required many working hand in hand. Individual donations contributed a major portion of the required funds, plus over 30 churches collected money that assisted greatly.

  • Help GES class win prize

The United Commercial Travelers (UCT) asked schools to submit videos showing how a $10,000 prize would help their program for students with intellectual disabilities.
Galax Local Council 720 is excited to announce that Galax Elementary School is among the nine finalists.
To vote, log onto the UCT website at www.uct.org. Click the link for “UCT Gives Back Contest.” By clicking the link to watch the video for Galax Elementary School, you can then cast a vote for GES.

  • Bewildered by buzzards

I am writing about your Jan. 14 article on the vultures in Galax.
Your distinction between buzzards and vultures is a bit confusing, though. Your headline mentioned “black-winged buzzards and vultures,” when in fact both vulture species have predominantly black wings.
You went on to say “the common buzzard more closely resembles a hawk.” This did not make any sense either.  What is a common buzzard?

  • Student curious about Virginia

I am 11 years old and live in Washington state. I go to Conway School in Mount Vernon. I am a young fifth grader.
At my school we do state reports, so, I chose the great state of Virginia, of course! We are supposed to write to some newspapers in our state, so I chose your town.
I am writing to get more information and artifacts from the state.
You can help by sending me stuff like magazines, key chains, maps, postcards, or any other artifacts that you think might be cool for my report.
Thank you for taking my letter under consideration!

  • Looking at the year ahead

2012 will go out as debt-ridden, violent, political abuse of power, sock it to the taxpayer and demand for stricter gun control.
2013 is shaping up as a repeat of the old wags. Political games, more taxes, spending control (a joke). So-called leaders in Congress call each other names, a $16.5 trillion deficit burdens this nation.
GOP wants spending cuts, while the liberal agenda is tax and spend and don’t worry about it.
In the middle of all this is Social Security and Medicare. Will it be there for the future?

  • Toy drive donors thanked

We would like to thank everyone who donated to the Fries High School Website toy drive.
Because of caring people like you, we were able to buy toys, clothing, and food for a lot of kids in need in the Fries area.
This was made possible through the joint effort of several people, including the Fries Methodist Circuit Youth Group.
Also, thank you to our Santas for all their work delivering the gifts, and to everyone who played a part in making the toy drive a big success!
