• Patients at the mercy of healthcare industry

Health care in America is an absolute scam.
While insurance companies, drug companies, and healthcare providers get richer and richer, people who need their services are simply “hostages” to their demands. Either you pay the ransom, or you can just die.
Congress blames the insurance companies. But they are not about to put any restrictions on the cost of healthcare. (Which drives the cost of insurance).
Why should they, theirs is free. “We” have to pay for theirs.

  • The myth of tax cuts and job creation

Since 2001 when China became a member of the World Trade Organization, thousands of major U.S. corporations have shifted manufacturing to China and other low hourly wage countries.
This has resulted in the loss of millions of American manufacturing jobs, while creating record profits for many American branded corporations.
American chief executive officers are receiving record compensation for their decisions to utilize much cheaper foreign labor.

  • Copy of ID should not have been accepted at poll

In the recent school board election for Fancy Gap District, I feel that I was the recipient of an injustice by the Carroll County electoral board.
On Election Day, Nov. 7, 2017, one vote was not counted by poll workers because the voter had a copy of their picture ID, not the original ID. Anyone knows that tampering could take place when a copy is made. Dates, numbers or other info could have been altered.

  • No relief for middle class in tax bill

Trump may throw a few carrots in the tax reform to the middle class and we will accept, as this is all we demand.
We have a liar as president and all the tax break does is enrich Trump and his family, who could care less how much the middle class and low income are hurting. Just look at the price we are paying for the Trumps to live in the White House and promote their investments.

  • Remember the elderly, lonely at Christmas

No Christmas tree in this house,
    No wreath upon the door.
The old man spends Christmas alone once more.
    Forgotten by his children,
And by his neighbors he is ignored.
    They are too busy,
    They pass by his door.
The old man spends Christmas alone once more.
As he sits alone with tears streaming down his face,
The forgetfulness of his children and neighbors,
    His memory cannot erase.
With a peaceful look upon his face.
Slowly his wipes away the tears.

  • Community can help 4-H for holidays

What do you get for that person that has everything?
Give the gift of life-changing experiences through your local 4-H program.
Did you know if you give to Grayson County 4-H, 100 percent of this money goes directly to the local kids in Grayson County?
Your money is not paying for a salary, someone’s office space or for company lunches. One hundred percent of your donation supports 4-H programming in Grayson County schools, provides scholarships to summer camp and provides education access to those that may have otherwise been limited financially.

  • One night before Christmas...

Editor’s note: Andy Johnson, age 8, of Galax wrote us this letter, his retelling of “Twas The Night Before Christmas.”
One night before Christmas, they was all snug in their beds as candy canes danced in their heads.
The children were dreaming about Santa and his elfs in his sleigh, riding all around the world as they was delivering presents to every good girl and boy.
But, they heard a noise. It sounded like reindeer prancing on the rooftop.

  • Our brave new world
  • 9th District needs better representation

As I drive by the Crossroads Institute, with a parking lot full of cars or when I visit the Blue Ridge Music Center, which draws thousands of tourists from all over the world, I remember fondly the efforts of our former representative, Rick Boucher, and all he did for our 9th District during his 29 years of service.

  • Have compassion for mother charged in child’s death

This is concerning my granddaughter and the death of my grandson.
She has been going through the legal system since this happened almost eight months ago. I think it’s time to give her and her family some time to grieve and heal the best they can.
People involved in this legal system are trying to make an example out of her... because of a video that a certain person has pushed to get her convicted.
I think all involved in this should be ashamed. She doesn’t need to be hated and locked up, she needs freedom and compassion.
