    Start collecting
I see in the paper where Hillsville is going to do things to thrive. The first thing they need to do is collect the back taxes. That would be best thing for the welfare and good of the community. Get busy.

    That’s the system

    Getting the sales pitch
I titled a vehicle recently at the DMV in Galax. Within a week, I started getting warranty papers in the mail wanting to know if I wanted an extended warranty on it. I bought the vehicle out of state and no one knew I bought it but the DMV. I was wondering why they were giving my address and name to people trying to sell me extended warranties.

    Good works
I want to thank the First Baptist Church of Independence for providing such a nice appreciation luncheon for the teachers. We all enjoyed the meal very much and sure do appreciate you all thinking of us in such a kind way.

    No big deal

    Government lies
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I take offense that the government is listening in on phone calls. This is an invasion of privacy. If the setup had been as the government said, then, they would have gotten the Boston bombers before they could hurt people. Our government lies. It’s a good thing their name is not Pinocchio, because we would have to pay for U-Hauls to haul them around in.

    Counting chickens

This is funny. I know people that work in the food business but there is a restaurant owner who makes his people count every piece of chicken at night and put it up and freeze it and then turn around and re-sell it the next day. They are supposed to get rid of it. Boy, ain’t he greedy.

    Don’t bother
Please trash the idea of a dog park. We don’t need that expense for the city.

    Poll results
This question is directed to the letter to the editor from Ron Pratt, “Firearms background check deserves debate.” While I agree with Mr. Pratt that we should have background checks, I strongly disagree with him quoting that 92 percent of the people want these checks. I don’t know where he is coming up with these figures. I think he needs to go back and look at some of the surveys. Nowhere have I seen 92 percent in favor of background checks, restrictions on rifles or restrictions on clips or magazines.

    Standing up
A big thank you to the council member that voted no to the sale of wine at the Leaf & String Festival. Thank you, [Vice Mayor Willie] Greene. Way to go. Stand up for your principles. Stand up for your morals. We need more of that in politics. We don’t need beer. We don’t need wine at these downtown festivals. Not necessary.

    Time for action

    Prevention tool
Some people object to publication of photographs and crime descriptions in the newspaper. This shows that some people still have some shame with committing crimes. I think that this is a healthy sign and a deterrent to further criminal activity. I hope I never have my picture in the newspaper, but I believe this is an excellent crime prevention tool. People should think first. Crimes are harmful and shameful.
