    Driving around
I’m just wondering why it was okay for town councilman David Young to drive the town police department’s electric car around the Hillsville flea market [with his wife]. Is this practice ethical to use town property? Plenty of people saw it. I’m sure plenty of others would have liked to use it. Isn’t there a policy in the town on equipment being used for personal use?

    Doesn’t qualify
I believe in supporting all veterans but sometimes I wonder about the Wounded Warrior Project. I am a disabled veteran myself. I get a check every month and I know for sure a lot of World War II veterans didn’t even file their claim. They were wounded and didn’t even file a claim until they retired. So, I wonder about this Wounded Warrior Project. They all get checks, or are supposed to.

    Drawing the brakes
I was just calling about drawing the brakes in Galax and all the areas around. We have always had to draw our brakes and even on a horse wagon you have to draw brakes. I guess that’s the reason the garages and wreck trucks stay so full and rescue squads — people don’t know how to draw brakes. Just keep it under control the best you can.

    Let God judge

    Don’t touch the gas
In response to the caller who has to ride the brakes, try not riding the gas pedal. If your car goes more than 25 mph with your foot off the pedal, then a visit to your mechanic might be in order. Your car is a danger to all of us. Try crossing four lanes of traffic on foot or pulling out in front of four lanes of heavy traffic traveling at 45 mph. What’s your hurry anyway?

    Is it fair?
In regard to the trooper rear-ending a citizen’s car, if I rear-end someone it is an automatic ticket. However, when the trooper rear-ends someone, there are no charges filed. Is this fair?

    Radar blues
I’m calling about “hiding in the bushes.” Back in the 1950s and ‘60s, they used to have a record out that was called “Radar Blues for the Truckers.” It said they were sitting back in the trees in twos or threes waiting for the truckers to come to give them a ticket. Now, they are hiding in the bushes in twos and threes waiting for the lead foots to come on by in the 25 and 35 mph zone in Galax so they can give them a ticket. So, we will all just have to be satisfied.

    It’s simple
This is in response to all the comments about speed traps in Galax and surrounding areas. If you don’t speed, you don’t get a ticket. If you break the law, you should get a ticket. One law is just as important as any other law. Try slowing down and you won’t get a ticket and there is no trap at all.

    Questions about hospital
Regarding Twin County Regional Hospital, how long is third floor going to be closed? How many positions have been eliminated since Duke LifePoint took over the facility? How many long-term managers have been required to reapply for their jobs? When is the community going to get the money from the sale of the asset that they owned? It has been 15 months or greater.

    Kids first
Regarding resource officers, I think the school board needs to look at what its priorities are — putting resources at our school to look after our kids or taking it to buy the superintendent a new vehicle. I don’t think the school board is looking at priorities. They should be looking at the kids first. If they are not, we are in the wrong business.
