    Question of fairness
A caller said was racism to say that you hate President Obama, but does that mean that it is not racism to say that you hate George Bush because he is not part of a protected minority? And, all this talk about the police officers being prosecuted for arresting blacks, where is the fairness in this country? If they arrest a black then the police are going to be prosecuted? I can understand why there are less people being arrested now.

    So wrong
For the president to say the ruling handed down on gay marriage is a victory for the American people is so wrong. It was a victory for a group of confused people — a group of people that he belongs to. Very confused. To light up their White House in rainbow colors was so embarrassing. I’m sure it was to many others. He does not represent the majority of Americans.

    Where’s the money?
Now my son will have a happy and good reason to go to school with building trades and Mr. Jones back in Independence school. Have they found out where all the schools money has gone? They are just talking about budget now – side tracking. Where did the money go?
Editor’s note: The county is conducting an investigation of Grayson school finances to answer that question.

    Holes to fill
Whoever is responsible for upkeep at the entrance to the Galax end of the New River Trail needs to do some much-needed maintenance. There are two large potholes at the entrance that can damage a car. It’s embarrassing for out of town visitors to see a parking lot in such poor condition. Especially since they charge such a large parking fee.

    Doesn’t matter
It really does not matter what anyone thinks about who wears what to church. It is what God thinks, not what a person thinks. We are not there to judge whether they wear bad clothes or good clothes or what. That’s not what we go to church for — to see what somebody wears.

After reading in the paper about Lucy Nottingham winning the teaching prize at Laurel School, I was really tickled for her. I don’t know her, but I was really tickled for her. I was talking to another lady who told me they don’t tell you this, but she has already been transferred to another school. It’s about time we let teachers that have master’s degrees do the work they are trained to do.

    Postal workings
I was reading Mr. Morton’s [letter about] the post office. That’s just the typical company run by the government. I agree with him. That’s the reason FedEx and UPS is killing them on delivery times and pickups and everything else. You can’t expect any more out of them. They are run by the government. It’s your tax dollars at work.

    Protests in history
In the May 11 edition, a caller lamented that protests are just so sad. So sad to see a group of people protesting. If not for protesting and violent protests, we would still be a colony of England. If not for protests, we may still be mired in Vietnam. Perhaps this caller would be happier if we didn’t have the right to protest.
