    Saving inheritance
Polls have consistently shown that a vast majority of Americans oppose the death tax. That’s why it is hidden — buried deep in Obama’s budget. The death tax is cruel. People have already worked hard all their lives and paid taxes all their lives and now they want to take the children and grandchildren’s inheritances away from them. It is cruel and it should be cast off.

    Firefighters pulled over
Is it true that the Galax Police Department has given speeding tickets to two Galax firemen while they were answering calls? If it is, what on earth is going on in the city? First, they change the speed limit to get more money and now this. I hope the council gets involved.

    What’s trash?
Apparently some of our fine [citizens] don’t appreciate the people that support the fiddlers’ convention, calling them trailer trash. Those people are family members with kids that support businesses in the town. If you really want to see trailer trash, why don’t you drive up to Independence and see all the carnival that is parked up and down the scenic New River. It’s a disgrace to the county.

    Fight for store
Attention residents of Galax. Please, let’s all get together and fight to keep Kroger in Galax. This store is a part of us. The employees seem like family to everyone. Please, please everyone call these numbers and try to keep Kroger open. Call (540) 536-3500.

    Waste of salt
I have a big problem with the highway department wasting chemicals on dry roads. This is such a waste. Need to take this money and repair roads instead of wasting salt.
Editor’s note: Perhaps the chemicals prevent ice and snow from sticking? Maybe it’s a preventative measure.

    Kroger fan
I am very disappointed to hear about the closing of Kroger in Galax. The managers and staff are very professional and courteous. This loss is very bad for our community. I always shopped at Kroger because of its selection of healthy food and organic produce. If you ask for a product, they go to great lengths to get it. Excellent customer service. I hear there are petitions to save the store circulating online and otherwise and I will certainly be looking for them to support.
