    Sidewalks a necessity
The City of Galax needs to build a sidewalk on both sides of U.S. 58 going toward the cinema, toward Walmart and toward Crossroads Institute. Lots of people walk along the sides of the road. Many people do not have transportation. Others would like to ride their bicycles. I also see women pushing baby carriages. Galax definitely needs sidewalks on both sides of 58 so that citizens and tourists can walk and bike through that area to the shopping center and to Crossroads. This would serve many people and is a necessity.

    Cold case
I’m a graduate of Galax High School. On the issue of the new field house, instead of naming it after Deputy Bartlett, it seems to me like everybody has forgotten about Brandon Billings [who was slain in 2002].

    Don’t mess with texting
I have a creek that runs through my property and a beautiful place to camp out. Last week some of my relatives came to camp out and I decided to go sit by the campfire and talk. All they wanted to do was text on their cell phones. The next day I went to the supermarket and people were standing in the middle of the aisles texting on their phones and I had to ask them to please move. What has happened to the good ole days when you could have a conversation with people and enjoy your shopping at the supermarket?

    Take control
People need to stop worrying so much about whose picture is on the front page of the paper and worry more about the actual crime that is happening in our community now, such as the home that has recently been invaded and children and a woman held at gunpoint. That’s the kind of thing we need to be concerned about, not what other people think when they come to our community. We need to think more about how to get our community back under control.

    No answer
It’s amazing that when a controversial decision is made in Grayson County like firing a coach, you can’t get the superintendent or the school board members’ phones to work. You call and you call and you can’t get an answer. Someone needs to call the phone company and fix the phones up there in Independence.

    Plus-sizes
I’m calling, not to complain about the presidency or having potholes in the road. I’m calling to complain about the city not having any plus-size clothing stores other than Walmart or Cato. We need [choices] with quality clothing that will fit 5-foot-2 people instead of all just 5-foot-10 and up. Fries, you have been doing some pretty neat things lately. Why not bring in a plus-size store in to the old company store? I would travel to Fries to buy the clothing. It would be really nice if we had [that] in Galax.

    Hiss, hiss
Isn’t Galax a great little town? I just love the “live and let live” atmosphere around here. Like my neighbor. He has this unusual hobby of raising feral cats under his front porch so his dog can chase them down in the yard and kill them. Most places, the authorities would kind of look down on this type behavior. But here in Galax, [it is viewed as] “there are too many cats in Galax anyway.” Now, ain’t Galax a great little town?

    Paving of U.S. 52
For everyone who is complaining about U.S. 52 South below the parkway, it has been [repaved]. The rough patches have been paved and we want to give a thank you to Virginia Department of Transportation in Carroll County.

    Other culprits
About the article about the drug bust here in Galax — I’m glad you are getting the meth dealers off the road but I think you need to work on the prescription drug dealers, also.
