    Banner year for town
Editor’s note: Independence Town Manager Jerry Hughes last week issued this statement in response to two Hotline comments published in the March 25 edition of The Gazette, concerning why the town hasn’t changed its seasonal banners downtown:

    Tisn’t the season
I would just like to remind the Town of Independence that Christmas is over. They still are flying the Christmas decorations up on Main Street. We are almost ready for Easter now. I know this happened again last year but please. The flags are really pretty and they really added to the town. But Christmas is now over so they need the spring flags up. Hopefully they will get that done.

    Living in sin
I saw in The Gazette that our lawmakers in Richmond have made another sin legal. It has always been illegal to live together if you were not married, even though a lot of our couples broke God’s and man’s law. Some unmarried couples that live together even attend church together. God will be their judge. Read your Bible. God’s law does not change.

    Misunderstood
To the editor: I am the one that called in the “gun control worries” in the Hotline. You are misunderstanding me. I am not saying the officers should not get a lunch break. I am saying I shouldn’t go by the restaurant and see [so many officers from different police agencies] at the same time. I am saying that if the police officers were out patrolling and not at lunch at the same time, people might not be afraid and may not all want to buy guns and carry guns. Don’t post and misinterpret what I said.

    Prison mix-up
I was reading in the paper today about the new state prison in Grayson County, how you could shop there, you could eat there, you could rent a room there. I thought prisoners were supposed to pay for their crime. Looks to me like they are getting the easy street.

    Sickly cycle
We keep our kids home when they are sick. We don’t have time limits when they get sick. The school calls, we have to go for a meeting and are told our kids cannot miss more school. So, we send them to school. More get sick. What is up with this?

    Speed trap
Can you have an investigative reporter determine why the bypass around Hillsville speed limit is only 55 when most areas that have similar features would have a 60 or 65 mph speed limit. I’m concerned that every time I use the bypass it has become a speed trap for the Hillsville Police Department to spend their time trying to catch people doing 55 on a highway that is designed for higher speeds.
