    Cloud of smoke
It’s rather sad when you visit a relative at a nursing home and they have brought the residents out front to smoke and you have to wade through the cigarette smoke to get to even the front door. Some people are allergic to cigarette smoke and they can’t do that. It is just pitiful that the staff does that and the administration doesn’t do something about it.

    Unwelcome help
I read the editor’s note on the coaching question. It said the coaches are tutors that work with students that need extra help. I think someone needs to talk with these coaches about their job description. I was told from the reading coach and math coach that they are not supposed to work with children, that they are just there as a resource for me. I have enough sense to get my own resources, thank you.

    Pump comparisons
I was wondering why gas is always so much higher around Independence than anywhere else. Gas is cheaper in Elk Creek, Wytheville, Baywood and Galax. I have even seen gas the same price in Mount Airy as in Independence and they have a much higher gas tax in North Carolina. The other day when we went to Galax, gas was 17 cents a gallon cheaper in Baywood and 24 cents a gallon less in Galax than it was in Independence.

    Start collecting
I see in the paper where Hillsville is going to do things to thrive. The first thing they need to do is collect the back taxes. That would be best thing for the welfare and good of the community. Get busy.

    That’s the system

    Getting the sales pitch
I titled a vehicle recently at the DMV in Galax. Within a week, I started getting warranty papers in the mail wanting to know if I wanted an extended warranty on it. I bought the vehicle out of state and no one knew I bought it but the DMV. I was wondering why they were giving my address and name to people trying to sell me extended warranties.

    Good works
I want to thank the First Baptist Church of Independence for providing such a nice appreciation luncheon for the teachers. We all enjoyed the meal very much and sure do appreciate you all thinking of us in such a kind way.

    No big deal

    Government lies
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I take offense that the government is listening in on phone calls. This is an invasion of privacy. If the setup had been as the government said, then, they would have gotten the Boston bombers before they could hurt people. Our government lies. It’s a good thing their name is not Pinocchio, because we would have to pay for U-Hauls to haul them around in.

    Counting chickens

This is funny. I know people that work in the food business but there is a restaurant owner who makes his people count every piece of chicken at night and put it up and freeze it and then turn around and re-sell it the next day. They are supposed to get rid of it. Boy, ain’t he greedy.
