    Out of control
The U.S. government is out of control and the fault lies on both of the main parties. The U.S. is being sold down the river. Unless we throw out an anchor, we are going over the falls. Big government is not an answer. It is the big problem. The economy of the U.S. is strangled with regulations and unsure taxes and now insurance problems. All the problems come from what were originally good ideas but the results of overzealous leaders have resulted in death of the U.S.

    Vacated
I have a question for Mayor Crowder and the Town of Hillsville. Why did Greg Bolen get two more weeks of vacation when he resigned, when he has already used his vacation for this year and several years to come?
Editor’s Note: Town officials confirmed the day after he resigned that Bolen had saved up a little over two weeks of vacation time. This is not an uncommon practice, since vacation time usually must be either taken or reimbursed if it isn’t used. No more calls on this matter, please.

    Running a tab
Concerning the $30,000 owed for school meals, when Carroll County teachers don’t pay for their own kids’ meals and run an outstanding balance, why do they expect anybody else to pay?

    No access
I took my kids to Providence School in Fries to the playground the other day. I didn’t realize they had turned it into Fort Knox. Everything is locked up tight. Kids can no longer play on the playground. What do you think about that, taxpayers? We paid for it. Now we can’t use it.
Editor’s note: The former school is property of the Fries Volunteer Fire Department, which uses it for a substation and to host fundraising events.

    Bake sale?
I wanted to make a comment on the caller that talked about Carroll supervisors taking away the funds from the sheriff’s department. I totally agree. I think the county ought to consider maybe having fundraisers and such as that. Be creative instead of taking away from the sheriff’s department. They really need it. They did a real good job and are doing a lot of good work behind the scenes.

    Central location
There are 21 acres right in the middle of Galax that have been for sale for five or six years that would be a perfect place for a new school. Looks like someone on city council would recommend that spot for the school instead of a residential area.

    Yummy
Every time I read a letter to the editor about greenhouse gases and the environment when it is really about a vegan agenda, I am going to eat an extra hamburger with a side or ribs.

    Salute to graduates
I would like to comment on how well-organized Galax High School’s graduation was. I love graduation outside. The well-maintained football field was the ideal place for my nephew’s graduation. Galax City Schools did a great job organizing and planning this event. I hope all future graduations will be outside. Congratulations, class of 2014.
