  • Turns 94

    Lelia Poe celebrated her 94th birthday Aug. 7 with a party at her home. She was born Aug. 4, 1917. She was the wife of the late Kyle Poe.

    She is the mother of Bobby Poe of Edgewater, Md., and the late Ralph Poe. She has four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

  • Cornett, Drawdy marry

    Marley Emerald Cornett and Russell Vincent Drawdy were joined in marriage during an outdoor ceremony at the gazebo of West Wind Farm Winery and Vineyard in Max Meadows on June 17, 2011. David Manley officiated.
    The bride is the daughter of David and Teresa Cornett of Woodlawn. Her grandmothers are Bonnie Cornett of Galax and Donna Elliott of Murrells Inlet, S.C.

  • Wildwood 'megasite' dedicated


    Regional leaders want to compete with North Carolina markets for new companies and jobs with the Wildwood Commerce Park megasite, said Grayson County's Mike Maynard on Tuesday.

    Having earlier joked with a Wythe County elected official that he wanted to take jobs away from that neighboring Virginia county, Maynard revised that comment later in the dedication of the business park.

  • Big plays, solid D for Tide

    Galax enters the 2011 season with high expectations. Its first scrimmage didn’t do anything to dampen those hopes.

    Facing former district mate Giles in a two-hour controlled scrimmage Friday evening, the Maroon Tide scored four offensive touchdowns and kept the Spartan single-wing attack out of the end zone, earning praise from second-year head coach Mark Dixon.

  • Locals help fight fire, raise money for Patrick Co. school

    Patrick County authorities graded land for mobile classrooms Sunday near fire-damaged Meadows of Dan Elementary School, hoping to quickly establish alternative classrooms and minimize the time students are out after a weekend fire, a school official said.
    Local firefighters from Galax and Carroll County helped extinguish the blaze at the 72-year-old school.

  • Computer glitches plague Carroll schools' opening

    HILLSVILLE — The opening of Carroll schools went sour for students who suffered a scheduling glitch, one parent told the Carroll School Board at their regular August meeting last week.
    The scheduling problem brought Donnie Morgan, an education supporter, before the school board a day after the schools’ open houses and one day before the official start of the school year.

  • Man charged in bus wreck

    INDEPENDENCE — No injuries were reported Aug. 11 after a pickup truck rear-ended a stopped Grayson County school bus.
    Cpl. Matthew Adams of the Independence Police Department said the bus was stopped in traffic in front of the school board office on Main Street at 7:58 a.m. when the accident happened.
